Deion Sanders is the safest bet with the ball, sure. But Prime’s former teammates would bet on his skills with the hook. Prime’s passion for going out in the waters each holiday he gets to catch the biggest fish is a known affair. What isn’t a public affair, however, is him ending up in trouble several times because of his habit.

Prime’s former teammate from Braves, John Smoltz, dished out the secret fiascos that they had to keep hushed about for Sanders’s love for fishing. Recalling a time when they were practicing for their game in West Palm Beach, Smoltz revealed a well-kept secret of Deion Sanders. “We stayed at the PGA Boulevard and there’s a bunch of lakes around the golf course. He fished them out. Like took them out,” Smoltz said. To add to the humor, he also added that Prime “got kicked out of more places that said ‘no fishing here’.”

Yet after all this, Smoltz knows Deion Sanders’ love for recreational activity. Hence, he confidently stated, “I would not ever bet against Deion Sanders,” because “Deion is one of the most passionate fishermen he has ever seen.” Well, the memories of getting into trouble but doing the fishing again just for the thrill of it are fond memories that Prime recalls even today.

During his appearance on the ‘Full Send’ podcast, Prime spilled some beans on the trouble he got into. Kyle Forgeard, the host of the podcast, asked Prime about the time when he got arrested in 1996, thanks to illegal fishing. Deion Sanders revealed that he was fishing with a friend in a restricted lake at an airport in Florida. When the police officials revealed that he would be arrested after coming out of the lake, Prime’s response was, “I might as well enjoy myself.” Per a report then, even though Prime got arrested, he was allowed to keep the 10 fish he caught. Classical Deion Sanders. Even in his CU head coaching days, Deion Sanders’ passion for fishing has not diminished one bit, evident from the lakes named after him.

In a Well Off Media video, Prime gave his fans a tour of his property. Prime, being an avid outdoor person, took great pride in every lake that came with the property. In December 2023, Deion Sanders asked his followers for a name suggestion for his lake. “Lake Prime” was the name that he finalized after much to and fro on social media.

Prime also invited the Buffs’ star player Travis Hunter to go fishing in Lake Prime. Being a skilled fisher he is, Travis Hunter pulled out a 10-pound sea bass, leaving Prime in shock. Deion Sanders went crazy over Hunter’s move, exclaiming, “Oh my God! Oh my goodness! Oh, Lord Jesus!.” Hence, Hunter and Prime not only bond on-field because of the football but also bond off-field because of fishing.
