This college football season introduces a dynamic contrast between emerging and seasoned quarterbacks. Established powerhouses like Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State are opting for first-time starters like Jalen Milroe, while other notable programs such as Florida State, LSU, and Notre Dame are placing their playoff hopes on experienced signal-callers like Jordan Travis, Jayden Daniels, and Sam Hartman.

Jalen Milroe replaces Bryce Young as Alabama’s starting QB

Though new to many college football fans, Jalen Milroe has already seen the spotlight as Alabama’s backup quarterback for the past two seasons. Stepping in for a start in 2022 during Bryce Young’s injury, the 21-year-old brings limited experience in big Alabama games but is well-acquainted with the intense SEC atmosphere.

Ranked 109th nationally as a four-star recruit in the 2021 class, Milroe was the 14th-ranked quarterback, behind names like Caleb Williams and Quinn Ewers. His recruiting tale includes initially committing to Texas but switching to Alabama for the opportunity to play under offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, who later moved to Texas. Now, Milroe faces a crucial moment, as Alabama take on #1 Michigan in the upcoming Rose Bowl.

Milroe’s football career and performance thus far

Standing at 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 220 pounds, Jalen Milroe showcased his prowess with 2,689 passing yards and 29 touchdowns as a junior at Tompkins High School in Katy, Texas. In his senior year, Milroe continued to impress, amassing 3,825 passing yards, 559 rushing yards, and a total of 53 touchdowns, leading Tompkins to 30+ wins across 3 seasons. Initially he committed to Texas, later switching to the University of Alabama.

Transitioning to his college career, during the 2022 season, he stepped up with notable performances, including a victory against Arkansas where he replaced an injured Bryce Young, scoring two touchdowns in the 49-26 win. In his first career start against Texas A&M, he threw three touchdowns in a 24–20 win.

By the 2023 season, Milroe had become the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback, showcasing his skills with a decisive 56–7 victory against Middle Tennessee. Despite a setback against Texas, Milroe remains a key player for the Crimson Tide, contributing significantly to the team’s success on the field.
