In a decisive move to fill the coaching void left by Jim Harbaugh’s departure, Sherrone Moore has stepped in not just as a coach but as the architect poised to continue the storied legacy of Michigan Wolverines. While taking the reign as 21st head coach, Moore also becomes the first African-American to helm the Wolverines’ illustrious football legacy.

Propelled by former coach, Jim Harbaugh’s transition to Los Angeles Chargers, the football program announced Moore’s name as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Here’s everything you need to know about Michigan’s new head coach.

Moore’s journey from junior college to coaching excellence

Hailing from Derby, Kansas, Moore took the junior college route. He has spent two impactful years at Butler Community College before shifting to Oklahoma. For the Sooners, he played as an offensive guard for two seasons, 2006 and 2007. Within this period, he played a crucial role in securing two Big 12 titles and eventually contributed to BCS bowl appearances.

It was in 2009, that Moore’s coaching career took root at the University of Louisville under the mentorship of the then-coach, Steve Kargthorpe. Impressed by his dedication, he earned the trust as the tight ends coach for the 2012 season. Being part of the Cardinals, Moore celebrated a Sugar Bowl victory in 2012. Following this, he concluded the 2013 season with an impressive 12-1 record. 

Moore’s six-year journey rising through the ranks 

Moore’s ascent to the pinnacle of Michigan football has been a steady six-year climb. In the Wolverines, he debuted as a tight ends coach and gradually earned the respect and confidence of the recruiters. Michigan’s Athletic Director Warde Manuel shared his views about Moore, “He is a dynamic, fierce and competitive individual who gets the best out of the players he mentors. The players love playing for him and being with him in the building every day.” Moore then climbed up the ladder showcasing his versatility and adaptability by transitioning to coaching the offensive line. 

During the 2023 national championship season, he stepped into the role of Wolverines’ interim head coach for crucial games. Following this, Moore guided the team to significant victories in a high-pressure environment including that over Penn State and arch-rival Ohio State.   

As he guided Michigans to significant victories, he did leave a mark proving his mettle in a high-pressure environment. Previously, when he entered as an interim coach, his team management skills surpassed all expectations. As pointed out by Manuel, “Sherrone handled that situation in a way that sealed my already-growing confidence in him. He didn’t make it about him, it was always about the team!” The undefeated streak during his interim tenure solidified Moore’s candidacy.

Moore’s strategic prowess came to the forefront with the Wolverines excelling in scoring offense, pass efficiency and ball security. It was his leadership that played a pivotal role in securing the Big Ten East Division Championship. The most compelling evidence of Moore’s coaching skill was when he witnessed immediate success by transitioning to the coaching line in 2021. It was during that phase of time, that Michigans won the Joe Moore Award for the nation’s top offensive line unit in consecutive years.  

Sherrone Moore’s contractual details unveiled

Michigan Football Program went through a rough patch during the 2020 season. It was Moore who emerged as one of the few assistants to weather a major coaching staff purge. Hence, the football program has supported the new coach with a contract backed up by incentives for success and strategic safeguards.

The bonus is tied to achievements including the Big Ten, reaching the 12-team College Football Playoff. In case of unforeseen circumstances, the contract even covers provisions for Moore’s departure. In case, the coach was to be fired without any proper cause, the Wolverines would owe him 75% of his base salary backed with additional compensation. But it’s surprising to note that Harbaugh was offered as high as $12.5 million for a span of 10 years, yet he refused to continue his ties.    

Moore’s future at the helm of the Michigan Wolverines

Harbaugh’s transition to the Los Angeles Chargers marked a significant moment for the Wolverines. The football program entrusted its future to an internal candidate who has been an integral part of Michigan since 2018. As per the contract customized for Moore, the contract spans five years starting at a reported $5.5 million. 

As the new coach takes up the role, he carries with him the weight of expectations. Moore’s predecessor, Harbaugh achieved significant victories during his nine-year tenure. Hence, as the new coach steps in, he is inheriting a program with a rich football tradition. Along with the responsibilities, Moore faces the challenge of maintaining the winning tradition while navigating the departure of key players including quarterback J.J McCarthy and running back Blake Corum to the 2024 NFL draft.  

With the renowned players entering the transfer portal, the focus now shifts to Alex Orji, the projected quarterback and Donovan Edwards in the backfield.
