Is Charlie Weis Jr. the next big thing in college football coaching, or just riding his dad's coattails?

Charlie Weis Jr. is a dynamic college football personality and the Ole Miss Rebels’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Inducted into football in childhood, Weis Jr. has risen to the ranks of a successful coach. This makes him not only a young football maestro but also a respected figure in the football community, even though he is only 31!

Weis Jr. has Charlie Weis, the former offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots and former head coach of Notre Dame and Kansas, for a father. From this football antecedent, he blossomed with this background and continued progressing as he is today. He has coached in various capacities, and his current coaching position is at Ole Miss.

The start of Charlie’s career

Charlie Weis Jr. started his coaching career at an unusually early age. He is also an alumnus of Notre Dame. Trying his time as a team manager for his father’s staff at the University of Kansas through his last undergraduate year, Weis subsequently joined the coaching profession. His first major appointment was in 2018 at Florida Atlantic University, where he was appointed offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the young age of 24; this makes him the youngest ever hired as the coordinator in the modern history of D1-A football.

While working for Florida Atlantic University, Weis Jr. proved himself an effective coach, won the Conference USA Championship, and ranked among the 20 best teams in scoring and total offense. He had offensive tactics and helped build up players’ potential, such as the quarterback Chris Robison and the Mackey Award winner Harrison Bryant, which bolstered his coaching strength. At the same time, Charlie Weis Jr. can be recognized as a successful professional and a man with a storied family history. He is married to Jennifer, a former figure skater with whom they sired a son, Boston Maverick.

Weis Jr. moved to South Florida as the offensive coordinator and the quarterbacks coach after his tenure at FAU in 2021. This experience at South Florida allowed him to get more exposure and polish his coaching strategy for the job at Ole Miss. In his first regular season with Ole Miss, the team set the fourth-highest total offense average in the school’s history, grossing 496.4 yards per game. This performance placed it eighth within the FBS and third within the SEC, displaying that Weis Jr.‘s offense was systematic. With the leadership of Weis Jr., Ole Miss is among the top performers of the conference and the third in the nation regarding the rushing plays per game, accumulating 3,336 yards, a new school record.

Weis Jr. is also responsible for shaping fullback Jaxson Dart, one of the major components of the Rebels’ offense lineup. To appreciate his efforts, Weis Jr. was promoted and given a huge pay raise in 2024, and thus became the highest-paid offensive coordinator in SEC and the fifth highest in the country. He rose to a higher rank, raising his annual wage to $1.65 million. “Growing up around the game, I always knew coaching was my calling,” Weis Jr. said. As Ole Miss continues to carry on the brick down on the offense, whatever Charlie Weis Jr. has in stock will play a major role in the team’s future successes.
