Trevor Woods, the safety turned full-time linebacker for the Colorado Buffaloes, is going all in this season. Even Coach Deion Sanders couldn’t help but compare the young linebacker to NFL star Brian Urlacher at the Big 12 Media Days. With a staggering 42 solo tackles and 56 tackles, Woods emerged as the third-highest tackler on the team last fall.
While the Woods family is impressed with Trevor’s performance, they are not surprised. You see, football is in Trevor’s DNA. Trevor’s father, Ryan Woods, used to play football at Rice. Even his two uncles were college football players who played for Rice and Texas State. As Woods prepares for his first game of the season against NDSU on August 30, here’s what you need to know about the Woods family.

Growing up in Houston, Texas, Trevor was surrounded by all things football. He went to James E. Taylor High School in Katy, Texas, and was trained by coach Chad Simmons. But it was Papa Woods who first coached Trevor on the ABCs of football. Ryan Woods, Trevor Woods’ father, was an exciting football player for Rice University. He took the field as a wide receiver with the Rice Owls, showcasing exceptional skills on the field. A little more active during the mid-1990s — viewed as one of the times that college football peaked with serious competition and unmatched excitement — Ryan contributed much to his team.
On and off the field, his commitment marked Ryan’s time at Rice. He was known for his athletic prowess and dedication to the game, contributing to the team’s successes during his tenure. After his college football career, Ryan remained involved in sports, but detailed specifics about his post-collegiate career in football or other athletic ventures are less documented.
Woods Senior is a Project Controls Supervisor at Enbridge, a multinational pipeline and energy company. Ryan regularly attends the Buffs games and cheers for Trevor. He is also quite active on his social media, especially on X, and regularly posts updates about his son and Buffs football.

Mama Dania Powell Woods could not be more proud of her son, Trevor, whose snapshots and tweets she regularly shares on X. While Papa Trevor guided Trevor regarding the games and drills on the field, Dania supported Trevor off the field.
Trevor is also a brother to his three sisters, Taylor, Tessa, and Talyn, whom he loves dearly. When not playing football, Trevor enjoys spending quality time fishing with his dad, Ryan, and waiting for hours for the big catch while bonding with his dad.

Trevor has made waves in the football world in the last few seasons. Leaving no stone unturned in his preparation as a linebacker, Woods has gotten noticeably bigger this season, gaining almost 20 pounds in less than one year, bulking from 198 to 217 pounds. Trevor has significantly boosted his strength through a dedicated strength training routine and proper nutrition at Colorado.
Trevor is also very confident about himself. “I’ve gotten a lot bigger and a lot stronger. I feel a lot more comfortable (at linebacker),” said Trevor, who is grateful to coach Sanders. Now stepping into a full-time linebacker role for the first time at Colorado, it’ll be exciting to see how Prime’s Brian Urlacher steps up for the challenge at hand, be it reading plays and executing tackles precisely or defending against the run and pass.
