The Texas A&M team will be facing one of their most difficult choices of the season as their HC Jimbo Fisher gets released. Fisher has been a coach for the team since 2017 for six seasons and has led them to several major wins. But it seems as if his 10-year contract had to be cut short because of a disappointing season this year.

Fisher’s contract began in 2017 and would’ve expired in 2027. But in 2021, after an impressive record, his contract was extended until 2031. Though the fans as well as the team rested a lot of expectations on his shoulders, he wasn’t able to deliver as well. With a record of 45-25 this year, it didn’t come as a shock to me when the Texan team decided to terminate his contract. But while the team recovers from such a drastic impact on the roster, here are the top 3 frontrunners who could very well replace Fisher.

Mike Elko, the coach for Duke University

Mike Elko, coach for the Duke Blue Devils, has had an amazing season so far. The team plays in the Football Bowl Subdivision of the NCAA and is one of the best teams this year. Elko holds a record of 6-3 this season and continues to make a name for himself. He was the defensive coordinator for the Texas A&M in 2018 but left in 2021 for Durham.

The Devils’ starting quarterback, Riley Leonard, has been injured since week 5, but despite his absence, coach Elko has managed to stay resilient. Elko will be one of the most favored coaches for the Texas team due to his brilliance. But the question remains: will Elko want to return to his old team or continue to build up his reputation with the Devils from the ground up?

In my opinion, the doubts about Elko come into view when we talk about his tactics as an offensive coordinator. Elko’s success on the Texas team was solely due to the fact that the offensive plays were quite poor, and thus, the defense stuck out like a sore thumb. When it comes to the offense, Elko might not be the best person for the job, but only time will tell if he gets to make the decision or not.

Dan Lanning, the coach for the Oregon Ducks

The Oregon Ducks have had one of their best seasons in the NCAA. They currently stand on a fantastic record of 9-1, only 2nd overall in today’s table. While the players continue to give their best, a lot of the credit goes to Dan Lanning for being able to motivate the team so brilliantly. But while he would be one of the ideal coaches to inculcate in the Texan team, it won’t be cheap or easy to buy him out.

Dan Lanning has a buyout clause of $20 million with the Oregon Ducks, and thus, he’s an expensive coach to afford. He has a 19-4 record in less than two seasons at Oregon, making him one of the most sought-after coaches. The only problem? The $20 million buyout But the Texas team will already be paying Fisher an amount of over $76 million, so it’s obvious a lack of financial assets is definitely not an issue.

Lanning is the leading candidate and is definitely the right man for the job. He’s only 37 years old and, as such, has a lot of years to be the best at his role. But the Oregon Ducks have had an amazing season this year, and it doesn’t make sense to me for Lanning to just leave the team he’s worked so hard to build from the ground up. Will the Texas team want to splurge all that money on Lanning, or will he eventually end up declining the offer for his beloved team?

Mike Norvell, the coach for the Florida State

Mike Norvell’s name has been bandied about in the coaching rumors because of the fact that he’s one of the most established coaches in the league. The Florida State Seminoles have had an unbeatable season so far and stand on a staggering record of 10-0. Thus, this proves everything that is credible about Norvell and the sort of brilliance he brings to his team.

Norvell was also leading the frontrunners for the job, and yes, the Texas team would also chase him desperately to be a part of the Maroon team. But with such an exceptional team and season so far, what would be the motivating incentive for Norvell to drop everything and move toward the Lone Star state? Ironically enough, Norvell has been a mentor to Dan Lanning, which proves that he’s the grandmaster of all the coaches in the league.

There’s a high chance that the Florida team might make it to the CFP championships with their current record so far. The championship won’t take place before January 9, and thus, the important question arises: would the Aggies want to wait so long to sign a coach who hasn’t shown any interest in the team at all? I don’t think Norvell would be the coach that will be seen in the Texas colors soon because all the circumstances point otherwise. Besides, he’s having a dominating run this season, and he has a champion team in his hands. It’s obvious that Lanning is the best decision for Texas A&M, and it all boils down to how deep their pockets are and how far they’re willing to go to get him on the team.

Will it be Lanning who joins the Texas team? Or is it going to be someone else who doesn’t have the same sort of expertise?
