Ron Mertz was born in Burnsville, Minnesota, and had always been a fan of the Gophers football team. He made that dream a reality, wearing the Gophers uniform from 1987 to 1992. “That’s all I ever really wanted to do,” Ron recalls of his childhood aspirations. At the University of Minnesota, he met Amy, who would later become his wife. Amy is from Green Bay, Wisconsin. Her father was a doctor in Green Bay, and Bart Starr, the Packers quarterback, was a family friend who even attended the wedding of Ron and Amy.

Furthermore, the couple’s love for sports extended beyond their college years. After moving to Kansas City in 2000, they continued to actively involve themselves in athletic pursuits, with their daughters Lauren and Mya excelling in college basketball at Kansas State and Drake, respectively. Also, Ron’s professional career in sales and marketing, currently as the executive vice president of sales for House of Smith, a winery, has been a significant part of the family’s dynamic​.

And as parents, Ron and Amy have been incredibly supportive of Graham’s football career. They have been his advisors and cheerleaders, ensuring he had the best opportunities to succeed. “We tried to be there as parents and wanted to be the bumpers on a bowling alley. We were probably overly cautious in not pushing any one school down his throat,” Ron said, reflecting on the college selection process. Also, their guidance and support were pivotal as Graham navigated the competitive world of college football, first at Wisconsin and now at Florida.

Influence on career

Graham Mertz began his collegiate career at Wisconsin, where he quickly made a name for himself. Furthermore, in his first game as a starter in 2020, Mertz threw for five touchdowns and completed 20 of 21 passes, setting a high bar for his performance. And over his tenure at Wisconsin, he amassed over 3,360 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. Also, he was recognized by the Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week and Big Ten Freshman of the Week.

Similarly, in the year 2023, Mertz attended the University of Florida and he did well. He played for Florida for his senior year and accomplished his career-best passing yards; 2,903 yards, twenty touchdowns, and a 72. 9% completion rate.
