Does Ollie Gordon's success prove that family support is the ultimate game-changer for athletes?

Ollie Gordon, the running back of Oklahoma State, is a workaholic athlete off and on the field. This fact was confirmed by Rodney Barthelemess, Trinity’s offensive coordinator, who once said “A lot of it is just genetics and his body, but a lot of it comes down to his work ethic“. Hence, it seems like the Doak Walker Award winner comes from an active well-cultured family.

It is pronounced that parents’ support is something that helps one to pursue his/her passion or desired career path. It was the same for the Oklahoma State Cowboys RB, too. However, there is very little information publicly available regarding the parents of Ollie Gordon. Now, take a look at the background history of the RB.

Born on January 15, 2004, in Fort Worth, Texas, Gordon attended Trinity High School in Texas. From high school, he started to play football and he won the Male High School Athlete of the Year in 2020. Such achievements inspired little Ollie a lot and he put his heart and soul into becoming the four-star prospect. Before choosing Oklahoma, he had several offers from Texas, USC, Houston, and BYU, but he decided to remain close to home so that his family could travel to his games. Hence, he has a very strong family bond which works as a spur in his journey.

Gordon is the son of Tarona Smith, who is the nurturing and supporting figure in Ollie’s life. Gordon is not a single child in his family as he has a sister, too. Additionally, the running back shared a very deep connection with his cousin Emmett Till, who is no more. However, this limited information about the RB’s family does not give a clear view of the family roots, but it reflects that the parents’ investment is the reason for Gordon’s speedy success.

Gordon’s journey from Trinity to Oklahoma

Starting in 2020, Ollie has been crowned many titles, such as the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, First-team All-Big 12, Unanimous All-American, and Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. Moreover, Ollie emerged as a star in 2023 after scoring 21 rushing touchdowns with 1,732 yards. Notably, the college football’s hottest tailback displayed his excellent performance at Oklahoma State into the Big 12 championship, and it paved the way for his commitment to Oklahoma as a running back. Hence, the journey was not smooth for the four-star athlete, but it is pretty obvious that Gordon’s workaholic nature would not change and his practice will bring more success to this man one day.
