With the NFL Combine season in the air, scouts and coaches are trying every test in the book to pick the best from the college football players. The competition to the NFL has taken every player who has opted for the NFL Combine week to display the best of their abilities to stand out more than the others. And the 1% of players like Kris Jennings are natural at excelling at the records, leaving the spectators speechless, even the best of them like Jim Harbaugh.

Jim Harbaugh had two roles to play while sitting in the bleachers at the Lucas Oil Stadium. Fortunately, he did hit two birds with one stone: that of a proud former Michigan head coach and that of an amazed Chargers’ head coach watching the Michigan defensive lineman on the stopwatch. The number that Jenkins built while dashing for 40 yards was enough to amaze his former head coach. The record set for a defensive lineman for a 40-yard dash is 4.78, which FSU player Brandon Fiske made, according to sources in the NFL Combine.

The 40-yard dash aims at determining acceleration and is a reliable measure of quickness, athleticism, and speed and Jenkins aced at it. Jenkin’s first dash ended at 5.02 on the stopwatch. While that was an applaudable milestone in itself, the second dash stole the show as he times at 4.90, with the highest record set being 4.78.

” Jim likes it. Last time they were in this building together, they were hosting a trophy for the third straight,” the host said, referring to the third consecutive Big Ten Championship that the Lucas Oil Stadium hosted amidst the sign-stealing farce of Michigan. Now that it is all in the past for Jim Harbaugh, he is likely to focus on his current situation with the Chargers and the roster restrictions.

Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers’ salary cap

Jim Harbaugh and Joe Hortiz have a $45 million salary cap for the year, which is already about $50 million over the cap amount. The reason for this is mainly the long-overdue hefty contracts of Chargers’ veterans, like Joey Bosa, Keenan Allen, and Mike Williams. While they have already restructured another player’s contract who was said to retire, they’re still standing on the edge of the knife, where they might have to let go of one or more of these seasoned players.

However, that is just one dilemma that Harbaugh deals with, another one is looming just above his head: adding other players to their roster. The ones he likes and the ones who will not put an unrepairable dent in the franchise’s salary cap. Harbaugh’s familiarity with the Michigan players’ strengths and weaknesses might prompt him to hire the players who managed to impress him at the NFL Combine Hortiz and Dean Spanos.
