With the regular college football season on the cusp of its conclusion, teams have set pretty high standards for the playoffs, let alone the national championship. For fans across the world, the playoffs are where the real tussle begins. To end the anticipation, the post-season schedule was released on Wednesday.

Throughout the month of November, the team had rankings released per week. However, the official list of semifinalists will be rolled out by the CPF committee on 3rd December. Despite the committee being the one with the final say, the top four teams after the conclusion of the regular season will have favorable results. Moreover, the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl are the semifinals for the ultimate national championship game, set to take place on January 8.

What is the current number of teams that qualify for the playoffs?

Currently, as per the protocol adopted by the CFP back in 2014, only 4 teams can be selected for the playoffs. However, after a ton of debates and discussions, the officials ended with the decision to expand the number. Previously, the year of execution was rumored to be 2026 or 2025. However, the committee has now officiated the year to be 2024.

This 12-team expansion will include the top six teams of the conference as automatic qualifiers. Along with them, the next six highest-ranked teams will follow suit. The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded 1-4 with first-round byes.
