Is Travis Hunter the leader CU Buffs desperately needed to shed their 'trash team' label?

For the haters, every great thing or achievement of Colorado is seemingly false or “edited.” Why? The Buffs didn’t deliver the expectations of people last season despite their promises and confidence. So when a clip of Shedeur Sanders’ talent went viral, it attracted the attention of their biggest critic who slammed it as fake.

In the viral video, Shedeur threw a remarkable pass to WR LaJohntay Wester. But for haters like Coach Jason Brown, he labeled the throw as “edited.” This isn’t an uncommon blow for Colorado and Shedeur, who received backlash from Coach JB for his Super Bowl claim. Travis Hunter, who’s well aware of how haters are viewing Colorado, has come up to address his team to flip the narrative.

On August 9, ‘unapologeticallybuffs’ uploaded on X, a post with an excerpt of Travis Hunter’s speech on Thee Pregame Show. In the video, the two-way star is seen setting expectations for the Buffs less than a month before kickoff. As one of the leaders of the Buffs, Hunter hyped the team saying, “We got 21 more days. Everybody doubting us, we the trash’s team in the Big 12 right now.. we got to be the number one team, we just got to keep working.”

A lot of credit was taken from Colorado when they ended last season 4-8 (1-8 in the Pac-12). As they transition to the Big 12 this season joining the other 15 teams, they aren’t viewed as a dominant threat. According to CBS Sports’ 2024 preseason power ranking among 134 FBS teams, Colorado sits at number 55 overall. In their conference, they are ranked 11th, which isn’t a flattering expectation. Thus, Hunter is determined to prove those people underrating Colorado with a powerful performance this season by going number one. And their revamped offense might boost their chances for that to happen.

Colorado is confident in their offensive line

While it’s early to say that Colorado could make it to the Big 12 Championship, it’s worth noting that they aren’t the same team as they were last season. Last year’s offense allowed a school record of 56 sacks, wherein Shedeur was sacked 52 times. But players who appeared for 53 of the 60 starts have either graduated or transferred. This went in line with Deion Sanders’ goal to revamp the O-line.

In addition to signing No. 1 5-star HS OT Jordan Seaton, Colorado also signed nine transfers, five of whom were full-time starters last season. Shedeur is confident in the new players saying, “You’ve got leaders on there. You got guys that’s not gonna accept being mediocre.” Some of the top transfers expected to make significant impacts this season include Justin Mayers, Kahlil Benson, Tyler Johnson, and Yakiri Walker, among others. Would the Buffs succeed in their goal given they’ve fixed the holes from last season’s gaps?
