After Colorado concluded its regular season with an unboastful record of 4-8, more major news was still left to reach for Coach Prime. Clearly, Coach Prime was not happy with the Buffs’ performance and promised to come back better each time, just to leave his fans disappointed in each of their last 6 games. Owing to the poor records, every fan and critic was left shunned when Sports Illustrated announced their ‘Sportsperson of the Year 2023’, who was none other than Deion Sanders.
This is not the first award that Coach Prime will be getting after putting on the cap and the whistle. Neon Deion led Jackson State to two amazing seasons before he left. Moreover, even in Colorado, despite the embarrassing record, Deion has still hit the bullseye when talking about media and their public image. Colorado Boys have some of the highest NIL valuations across the conferences. Not to mention how big of a figure Deion Sanders has created out of himself. Despite all that, many fans seem completely against the idea of Deion Sanders being the Sportsperson of the Year. Here’s why.
How did the fans react to Deion Sanders’ accomplishment?`

After all the disappointment, the audience that considered Colorado some of the finest teams at the beginning of the season, let out their anger right in the comment section of the post. As the news seeped into their minds, they were quick to change their reaction from silent to fuming. Here are some ways they reacted.
Coach Prime is here, and he's just getting started

For many, it was still nearly impossible to believe the news, whereas others thought that SI was joking. Moreover, some even went overboard with statements claiming it was fake. However, most of them were embarrassed.
This is embarrassing.

On the other hand, many fans were feeling second-hand disappointment for Buffs scores.
I would have my youth football players deported to Canada for going 4-8 and Deion is getting celebrated for it
— Three Year Letterman (@3YearLetterman) November 30, 2023
Other fans showed no mercy as they bluntly shredded Colorado’s recent performance to shreds.
They went 4-8. Recruits are de-committing. Assistants are leaving. What’re we doing here?
— Kyle Lindemann (@LuckIsMadeFF) November 30, 2023
Some commented about the seriousness of Colorado’s situation with all the de-commits happening amidst the celebrations. People getting disappointed with the team and leaving them because of mismanagement, their former OC accepting a job at SDSU, and over 6 students entering the transfer portal. With all of this along with the records, Sanders’ award was critically questioned.
That’s embarrassing. Dude had a losing season. Hardly deserving of any award.
— American Bossy (@FriedScones) November 30, 2023
For the others, Sanders was not a deserving person for the honor.

A few saved their anger towards Sanders and redirected it towards SI, criticizing them for their decision. Safe to say, Sports Illustrated might not have wholly expected this when revealing one of the most prestigious awards of the year.
