As the regular college football season ends, the Texas A&M Aggies are putting away the old as they look towards a brighter season under new coaching. Amidst the decision to dismiss head coach Jimbo Fisher, the Aggies have come up with the intention of hiring one of their former coaches who served as the defensive coordinator.

Performing as the head coach for the Duke Blue Devils for the second season, Mike Elko is a worthy contender to take Jimbo Fisher’s place. Considering his legacy during his four seasons with the Aggies leading them as one of the best defensive teams, his confirmation to this proposal would be lucrative for Texas A&M. But the question is whether he’ll give up his successful stint at Duke and return to Texas.

Jimbo Fisher’s contract with Texas A&M will come to an end following a subpar 2023 campaign. But the Aggies already have a new head coach in place, Mike Elko, their former defensive coordinator from 2018-2021. As per a report by Brent Zwerneman, Mike Elko will be hired after spending two seasons with the Blue Devils. But results still await as Elko sits down for a discussion with Duke on Sunday.

Texas A&M athletics director Ross Bjork said, “This is not an 8-4 job. It’s not. Because of the decision we made (to fire Fisher) but also because of the resources and expectations. Does somebody have the wherewithal to deal with that, the weight of (the job) and the magnitude, and not get fazed and rattled, not panic, and if something doesn’t go right, they fix what they need to fix?

While Bjork didn’t name any names, he indirectly took a jab at Fisher as he raised the challenge in a straightforward manner saying, “Do you have the chops to deal with this job? (It’s) not for everybody.”

Jimbo Fisher’s contract with Texas A&M in 2021 that would allow him to coach through 2031 comes crumbling down as the head coach was fired after the 10th game this season. He was fired on account of a lack of adjustments and execution after consistent losses. His record at Texas A&M for six seasons is 45-25 (27-21 in SEC).

Wherever Mike Elko goes, he leaves an impression behind. He joined the Aggies in 2018 after a successful career at Wake Forest (2014-16) and Notre Dame (2017). As the team’s defensive coordinator, he ranked the team as one of the best defensive teams which is apparent from the 34-14 in 2020.

His transfer to Duke in 2022 saw the rise of the Blue Devils who enjoyed their best season record of 9-4 since 2014. Mike Elko’s reputation at Duke is no joke as he led his first season winning nine games and being named ACC Coach of the Year. This 7-5 season may not be as successful as last year but Duke still gets a chance to play at the bowl games. Meanwhile, his absence saw a decline in the defense of Texas A&M.

After Elko’s transfer, the Aggies suffered 12-12 in their next two seasons. If Mike Elko joins the Texas A&M Aggies as the head coach, things could turn around for them with the beginning of the next season. After all, he has already made his worth visible. Stay updated for his response.
