Replacing an iconic coach in the world of college sports is a monumental challenge. However, just as successors emerged for John Wooden, Bear Bryant, and Mike Krzyzewski, someone must step up. Stephen A. Smith declares Deion Sanders as the perfect successor to Saban and here’s why
While names like Dabo Swinney of Clemson and Dan Lanning of Oregon are being talked about as potential replacements, Stephen A. Smith boldly advocates for Deion Sanders to succeed Nick Saban at Alabama, citing four major reasons: modern generation players, their “pulse”, the NFL prospect, and last but not least, the transfer portal. Smith emphasizes the shift in today’s player mentality and the impact of the transfer portal. He also points out Deion’s success in securing top-ranked transfer classes for two consecutive years.
“I’m thinking about Deion Sanders. He’s got the top-ranked transfer class right now,” said Smith. “The second year that he’s pulled that off. When you look at it from that perspective, the ability to recruit talent is key. If you’re going to replace the greatness of Nick Saban, it starts and ends first and foremost with being able to recruit. You can’t tell me if a big-time program like Alabama and somebody like Prime Time goes there.”

However, speculation looms if Coach Prime will be a good fit for Alabama
Deion Sanders has an impressive coaching record of 27 wins and 6 losses in three seasons at FCS Jackson State. He also managed to improve the record of Colorado from 1-11 to 4-8 in just one season, which speaks to his capabilities as a coach. As a Hall of Famer and a multi-sport athlete, Sanders brings a unique blend of experience and achievements that sets him apart. Although Prime Time Sanders doesn’t have direct program ties, his undeniable charisma and proven recruiting skills make him an attractive candidate. Breaking the historic head coaching color barrier at Alabama, and being similar to current DC Brian Daboll, adds to the appeal.
However, there are some drawbacks to consider. Sanders’ 4-8 FBS head coaching record may raise eyebrows, and his unproven track record at the power conference level could be a concern. Roster and staff churn during his time at Colorado might also be viewed skeptically by Alabama decision-makers.
