Is Cormani McClain being unfairly targeted, or does he deserve the criticism from the CU Buffs alum?

Woah! Another day, another new tag for Cormani McClain.

After being tagged as “immature,” the CB landed another name. This time, Colorado Buffaloes alum Matt McChesney called the player “dumb.” On July 17, McChesney appeared in an interview with the Zero 2 Sixty Podcast on BLEAV Network and pointed out how Deion Sanders made the right decision by letting McClain go. And McClain is believed to have made a blunder by losing the backing of someone as supportive as Coach Prime, who, even after his departure, wished him the best. Now the question is whether McClain’s talent will be enough to keep him afloat.

Currently, McClain stands at a crucial juncture, when he is allegedly on the verge of getting kicked out of Billy Napier’s Florida. The podcast host asked McChesney, “Was Coach Prime right about Cormani McClain, letting him go?” And here came the Buffs alum confident reply, “Yep, he’s right.”

He highlighted how McClain hardly listened to Deion to back up his comment. This is where the catch lies. Even after recruiting five-star kids, Colorado had to undergo such a fate. However, Coach Prime should have been careful since, as pointed out by McChesney, “ranking is an opinion it’s not something that was earned.” Deion planned to make the CB play on the other side of the Buffs’ two-way star, Travis Hunter. But poor Cormani!

His move cost him dearly. As McChesney pointed out, “This kid is so dumb that he could have been the other side of Travis Hunter. You know how many balls you’re going to pick, tip and play and like how well you can go out there and adapt and take over the game because they’re not going to throw.” It’s kind of McClain’s epic fail decision-making vs. pro-level prowess situation.

McClain’s notable stats speak volumes

FanSided’s John Buhler’s take on the CB was like a breath of fresh air. Buhler dropped in a big claim, “What is frustrating to me is McClain is arguably more talented than seemingly everyone who is either a true sophomore or a redshirt freshman in college football.” Despite being called out for his lack of accountability, the CB ensured his talents were indisputable.

Have an interesting take?

The former five-star recruit is still hailed as a great CB thanks to his accolade as the best-ranked cornerback in his class when he transferred to Lakeland HS. During his short but significant senior year stint, McClain bagged 16 tackles, five pass breakups, and two interceptions backed up by a forced fumble. All of these did not come easily. He is remembered as the leading man who propelled the school to a 14-0 season and snagged the Florida 4S state championship.

Even though he had only nine games to showcase his talent in Colorado, McClain started just four and registered 13 tackles, six unassisted, two pass breakups, and one tackle for loss. So far, so good. Things went off the rails as the transfer season rang the bell, leaving McClain to opt out of Boulder.
