JJ McCarthy, the quarterback for the Michigan Wolverines, hasn’t been playing at his full potential since Harbaugh was sacked. The 20-year-old has been one of the best QBs in the NCAA, but it seems as if he’s been distracted by the whirlpool of controversies that surround the Michigan team.
The Michigan team faced off against the Maryland Terrapins last week and upstaged them by a score of 31-24. Though the team secured a win, the fans of the men in yellow were highly disappointed with McCarthy’s performance in the game. He threw out several poor passes that could’ve cost Michigan the game if it weren’t for the other teammates. With his stats going lower and lower, the fans can’t help but speculate if Harbaugh’s firing has had a direct impact on McCarthy’s play.

On the latest episode of ESPN College Football, the host compared the stats of McCarthy before and after Harbaugh’s exit from the team. The difference in numbers that were seen in both of these situations is shocking and has left the fans in awe.
He said, “Look at what he’s done in the six games when Harbaugh was there, he’s averaging about 240 yards a game, 72 percent completion, 11 to 0 touchdown interception ratio. Well in the five games that Harbaugh was not there, 180 yards per game, 76 percent on the completion but he’s got a 7-4 touchdown interception ratio.” McCarthy is one of the driving forces behind the Michigan team, but if he continues to play poorly, he will end up being a liability for the team. As it is, McCarthy has managed to mess up his odds for the Heisman Trophy after the Maryland match, and he will be more than devastated about the rankings.
McCarthy’s Heisman Trophy odds: Where do they stand today?
Since Michigan has had an undefeated record this season, McCarthy has been at an all-time low with his stats. But after Harbaugh was fired mid-season, his performance was affected immensely and became evident through his numbers. Earlier, he was one of the frontrunners in the race, right behind players like Caleb Williams and Michael Penix Jr., but it seems like he won’t be able to take home the trophy this season.

Prior to the Maryland Terrapins match, his odds for the Heisman Trophy stood at +6000, but after the mediocre performance against Maryland, his odds dipped severely to +25000. Though it’ll be difficult for McCarthy to climb back up to the top of the odds table now, his team is one of the best teams this season and has a very good chance of making it to the playoffs.
