With the hiring of Sean Magee, the Michigan NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) state will potentially get a boost! Michigan is one of the 32 states to pass NIL legislation since the NCAA’s interim policy which allowed college players to earn through NIL. Even so, the U-M NIL hasn’t been good enough but that may be about to change.

Sherrone Moore is thinking ahead as he brought back Michigan’s former associate AD for Football Sean Magee to Ann Arbor. Magee has a decade of college experience working with the Navy Midshipmen as the Director of Player Personnel for five years. He already has experience with Sherrone Moore in Michigan, making him a good candidate for the post.

Sean Magee served as Michigan’s Associate Athletic Director from 2017-22. His return to Ann Arbor is going to land him the role of a General Manager to tackle the NIL landscape in college football. Considering that he also served as the Chicago Bears’ Chief of Staff since 2022, the work description won’t be something new for the new GM.

Magee’s role will include overseeing all aspects of recruiting student-athlete prospects to Michigan. He’ll also be responsible for allocating budget resources, formulating policies, coordinating business activities, monitoring staff performance, managing operational costs, improving administration processes, engaging with vendors, hiring and training employees, and identifying business opportunities. He’ll also work collaboratively with the Football Head Coach and closely with other assistant coaches and recruiting staff.

How will Sean Magee navigate Michigan’s NIL?

As the GM, Sean Magee will be tasked with managing NIL activities, aside from other roles like recruiting and sculpting the roster. He’ll lead the program’s NIL activities in concurrence with the Michigan Athletic Department’s efforts to do the same. Magee will also serve as Football’s NIL representative for Michigan Athletics. He’ll also present to current and future college students available NIL resources.

In addition, Magee’s role will also involve him building and fostering relationships with NIL partners. As Michigan continues to navigate the changing landscape of college football, the focus remains on supporting the college players and ensuring they can maximize the opportunities presented by NIL. The appointment of Magee might facilitate the program’s NIL scenario to move on an upward trajectory.
