It has been long since the Michigan Wolverines have experienced stability. Beginning with former head coach Jim Harbaugh leaving for the Los Angeles Chargers, the 2024 recruiting class has been facing an unexpected turn of events. The latest being, four-star linebacker signee, Jaden Smith, who put up a letter requesting his release from his national letter of intent (NLI).
With Sherrone Moore now at the helm of the Wolverines, this move marks the first deviation within Michigan’s promising recruit roster. The domino effect triggered by Harbaugh’s departure has left an impact both among the players and the assistant coaches.
A standout at 6-foot-2.5 and 195 pounds, Smith had committed to the Michigans in June last year while he formally signed with the Big Ten program in December. However, moved by Harbaugh’s exit, he has opted to explore alternative options to commence his collegiate football career. With this, Smith put up a heartfelt letter expressing his gratitude and intention.

Ranked as the 31st linebacker and No.343 overall prospect, as per the reports, Smith also is in charge of the distinction of being the 11th-best player in North Carolina. Referring to the coaches as family, he acknowledged the coaching staff for believing in him and highlighted the deep bonds created during the recruiting process. However, after all this, Smith made the agonizing decision putting up his request for release. With this coming to light, Harbaugh’s exit serves as a poaching force, creating ripples in the Moore-headed Wolverines lineup.
With Jaden Smith’s recent request, more unforeseen challenges await Sherrone Moore
Moore, who now heads Michigan, has been grappling with departures even before Jaden Smith’s decision. As per the recent loss that Moore faced was to lose Wolverines’ defensive backs coach, Steve Clinkscale. The coach had committed to the program for the past two seasons but recently switched alleigances to Harbaugh’s Chargers.

Apart from this, over the recent weeks, Moore has been exposed to back-to-back farewells of coaches. The 40-year-old former defensive coordinator of the Wolverines, Jesse Minter too reunited with Harbaugh by setting up ties with the Chargers. The head strength and conditioning coach, Ben Herbert, too refusing to work under Moore’s tutelage, followed the footsteps of Harbaugh to Los Angeles.
The influence of the current Chargers’ head coach also penetrated his own family, as his son, Jay Harbaugh moved out of the Wolverines. However, he will likely be hired as special teams coordinator by the Seahawks.
