College football can never run out of drama until Gus Johnson continues doing his play-by-play announcing. Despite not being a Michigan alum, the Fox News commentator takes great pride in Michigan’s team. Not only because he loves mocking Michigan’s long-standing rivalry with Ohio State, but also because Detroit is his hometown. Hence, when Michigan became the National Champions after a whooping 27 years, it was a source of great pride for Johnson.

And he wasn’t about to let the chance to unapologetically boast Michigan’s win in the face of Ohio State Buckeyes native commentator sitting beside him during a Michigan game go. It couldn’t have been more perfect as Johnson pulled out a Michigan merchandise flaunting their National Championship win from a Michigan Den bag, the official merchandise retailer of Michigan. It was a ‘National Champions Michigan’ printed pint glass while procuring which Johnson kept exclaiming “National Champions”. Sherrone Moore, appreciating Johnson’s in 3 words, called him “The GOAT himself!”

Well, Gus Johnson wasn’t about to stop there as he swiftly gave Michigan the edge in the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry. Leveraging Jim Jackson, a legendary Ohio State guard sitting beside him, Johnson rubbed salt in the wound by saying, ” Let me let you hold it. It’s heavy.” While Jackson was too dazed to do something, Johnson was hollering beside him. However, he wrapped up the situation with a strong “That’s my man!” to the NBA legend.

This isn’t the first time Gus Johnson has added fuel to the already raging fire between Ohio State and Michigan rivalry. It was in November 2023 that Johnson treaded onto a controversial path by giving a nickname to Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.

Gus Johnson nicknames Harrison Jr

It was during the ‘College Gameday’ ahead of the Penn State v. Ohio State, during which Harrison earned his nickname from the Big Noon Saturday announcer. Johnson coined Harrison as ‘Maserati Marv’, which was met with derision from the fans. The nickname was praising Harrison’s swift agility, despite him holding significant mass as a  6-4, 200-plus pound receiver, which is commendable. Even CJ Stroud called him’ Route Man Marv’ for his tight routes.

While the nickname didn’t stick as much among the fans as they believed it was ‘unreliable’, per Fox News, it was ‘iconic’. Hence, Johnson’s efforts to keep the Michigan-Ohio state rivalry burning in the off-season set that standard for Sherrone Moore in their probable showdown against Ryan Day and Co. in the next season.
