The problematic loopholes in football are demanding more and more attention as the shocking revelations become the first ones to break the headlines. The 2023 season was brimming with reported instances. The sign-stealing debacle, allegations of favoritism hurled at the selection committee and head coaches, and much more. And serving as the final sizzle to it all, Nick Saban announced his retirement.

Nick Saban has left a legacy, one that he would like to see Alabama cherish. However, programs didn’t bat an eye before reaching out to Alabama players, something that happens under the table in the NCAA. 247 Sports’ Mike Rodak commented on the pressing issue, mentioning, “Players began getting calls with huge NIL offers.” Reaching out to players who are not in the transfer portal is not technically yet acceptable. All of this is fueled by Shedeur Sanders’ four-word comment.

When Saban announced his retirement, the Sanders clan was some of the first ones to respond. While Coach Prime was applauding Saban’s achievements during his lifetime, Shedeur Sanders’ comment gave out a rather anti-ethical message. “Alabama players tap n,” commented QB Sanders, while his mother, Pilar Sanders, reposted the same. Various programs are already at gunpoint for engaging in such activities. While Deion Sanders is crowned the ‘transfer portal king’, these reportedly provocative statements by his son, and the star QB of Buffs, can taint that reputation.

Well, Sanders is not the only one to blame. The transfer portal has issued a special 30-day window for Alabama players to enter when it closed for every other team on January 2. It only goaded the allegations further. Analysts were soon to pick up on it, as they expected a probable flow of talent from Tuscaloosa. The transfer portal being a free agency gives an edge to the debate. However, before he retired, Saban made sure to appoint someone capable of dealing with all this well.

Nick Saban spotted interviewing candidates before his retirement

The ‘tampering’ issue is not something Alabama hasn’t seen before. They dealt with the allegations in the 2022 season as well. However, anticipated something of this nature was forthcoming. Hours before he retired, almost as a farewell gift to the Tide, Saban interviewed some candidates to take over him as the head coach.

While the candidates remain a mystery, Texas’ Steve Sarkisian, Washington’s Kalen DeBoer, and Clemson’s Dabo Swinney are reportedly the top candidates for the job. However, only the official comments from the officials could end the storm of possibilities.
