CFB teams should take notes from the flawless execution of the coup de maître by Nick Saban. Being almost a fortnight away from the ultimate showdown against the Michigan Wolverines, who are too hot to handle this season, Saban thought that now was the perfect time to pull out his master stroke: hiring a former Michigan staff member. Speaking of striking at the perfect time, Saban excelled in the move as they hope to have a celebrating new year by winning the Rose Bowl.

Coleman Hutzler’s, the former LB coach of Alabama, absence was a challenging thing to tackle for Saban. As Hutzler eases into his new role as a defensive coordinator for Mississippi State, it is up to Saban to build the rapport between the recruit and the team, days before a pivotal game. Tough, but Saban is getting the team prepared by the one who knows the Wolverines like the back of his hand.

Nick Saban hires George Helow

As per a report released by The Athletic on Thursday evening, Saban hired Wolverine’s former linebacker coach in place of Hutzler. Helow worked with the Wolverines for two seasons, 2021-22 and 2022-23, before parting ways earlier this season. Looking at the odds, Helow will most likely replace Hutzler as the linebacker coach. Yet official statements are awaited from Saban as he has yet to make a media appearance since the recruitment.

On the bright side, Helow is no stranger to working under Nick Saban. The former Michigan employee boasts the inception of his coaching career to be his internship with the Crimson Tide back in 2012. Following this, the Ole Miss graduate kindled his experience as a coach by working as a graduate assistant and safeties coach at Florida State, Georgia, and Colorado State. During his time in Florida, he accompanied the team to a national championship.

Saban to lock down Helow for good?

The former Wolverine LB coach’s contribution to the team is questioned, given that he has barely worked with the Wolverines this season. Not to mention the rapidly changing dynamics in the Michigan Wolverines. However, Saban seems sure of his pick, determined to have him around for the Rose Bowl.

Looking at the scarcity in the LB coach position of the Crimson Tide, if Helow impresses everyone with his work, he might as well secure a permanent spot under Nick Saban. Along with this, his diverse experience at multiple universities might aid Alabama when they need him the most: the National Championship.
