“Best player in college football.” Now anyone who has even watched a single game of Travis Hunter would know that he deserves that title. That kid can play on both ends of the spectrum, as WR or as a cornerback. He has that smooth flow and instinct which one needs for the offense, but at the same time, he also has amazing movement and playmaking ability while on defense. There’s a reason why ESPN decided to rank Hunter No.1 on their Best College Football Players list. Now, it looks like Ray G (former NCAA DB) from DD Fantasy Football is also here sharing their insights on what possibly makes Travis the best.
DD Fantasy Football posted a detailed video about Hunter on their channel on July 28th. “But if there were going to be a player to potentially challenge for the top spot, can Travis Hunter be that guy?” was the first question Ray decided to raise. Well, let’s find out. With 30 solo and 30 assisted tackles and 3 interceptions last season, he was very fluid on the field. As a WR, you can tell that this guy knows what he’s doing. However, the defensive end needs some work. “You can just tell watching the tape he’s still young, trying to learn that position,” DD noted. Hunter still needs some polish on the cornerback. Still, the stats do show a lot of promise. With 31 total tackles, eight assisted tackles, and five passes defended, and he had three interceptions on the season. Offensive and defensive plays aside, one more advantage that Hunter has that Ray pointed out is his overall build. “Travis Hunter is a unique athlete at 6’1, 185 lbs,” Ray mentioned. Hunter is long and lean and now has also managed to put on 10 more pounds, which makes him look much bigger on the field.

Back on July 15th, Daniel Jeremiah also noted some important things in his scouting report for Hunter. “Hunter isn’t quite as polished defensively as a cornerback,” Jeremiah had mentioned. This does strike a chord with what Ray mentioned about Hunter and his cornerback plays. But hold on, don’t let that fool you, ’cause the kid is at his best in press coverage. He got quick and hands and feed and loves to go underneath and play from there. “This guy’s at his best on a football field when the ball is in his hands,” Jeremiah had mentioned. Hunter has the skills to become the No.1 wideout. All he needs is more help on the defensive end. However, what fans would love to see is which team gets blessed with Hunter’s 2-way skills post-2024 college football season.

Where will he head to?

While Raiders still stand as the main option to head over to. Especially because of the connection that Deion Sanders and Antonio Pierce (HC Raiders) share, nothing is sure. Back on July 20th, Ian Cummings had made a mock draft list for Pro Football Network. Cummings has hopes that Hunter would work best with the Patriots. However, another report by Jordan Reid from ESPN begs to differ. “adding Hunter as an interchangeable defensive back would give them (Seahawks) options,” Reid had mentioned while predicting that Hunters will be picked up by the Seahawks.
However, we do have another wild card candidate on the list. What if Hunter goes to the Jets? Back in Daniel Jeremiah’s scouting report, he had compared Hunter with Garrett Wilson. “His movement skills and run-after-catch ability remind me of Garrett Wilson when he was coming out of Ohio State,” Jeremiah said. Wilson can be considered as one of the top 5 NFL wideouts and the way Hunter is making progress? He could get there soon. Regardless, only time will tell where he ends up.
