Is the NCAA rule benching recruits during struggles like Shedeur Sanders' fair or just plain ridiculous?

If there is one thing that Deion Sanders and Co. could change if they got to go into the future, it would surely be the O-line decisions they made in the 2023 season. The 2023 Buffs offensive line was as bad as it could get. They failed miserably at one of their main jobs, of protecting their QB, as Shedeur Sanders ended up being the most sacked QB in the country with 52 sacks. During his recent confession in the podcast with Reach the People Media, Colorado recruit Tyler Brown believed that if he had been given a chance to play alongside Shedeur in the season, he would have done much better.

I’ve been locked up for a year. I couldn’t play for a year. Like seeing my quarterback get absolutely killed and I couldn’t do nothing. Not just my quarterback, but my friend. You know it’s different when you genuinely care about that person. That was just hard,” Brown admitted, recalling the record-breaking number of sacks that still haunts Colorado and its fans. If Brown gets a chance this season, he is confident to turn the tables around, now that he is all set to play for the team.

When Brown originally transferred from Jackson State to the Buffs, it was music to CU offensive line coach Bill O’ Boyle and Deion Sanders, since he was expected to be one of the toughest players on the Buffs roster. However, one bad news from the NCAA swept that happiness right under Deion Sanders and Co.’s feet.

The reason why Tyler Brown was benched in 2023

The 6’3″, 325-pounder OL was always a part of the A-game of Buffs in Deion Sanders’ first season as CU head coach. But he forgot one thing amid all the planning, the NCAA rule forbidding any player who has transferred for the second time from receiving immediate eligibility unless they have a physical injury or mental health condition that pushed them to transfer from a school.

Well, matter of fact, Deion Sanders did not forget about the clause. Rather, he thought that Brown’s bout with mononucleosis while transitioning from Jackson State to Colorado would earn him the NCAA waiver. Before coming into the guiding umbrella of Deion Sanders at Jackson State, Brown started his career in 2019 in Louisiana.

However, he was also one of the players to follow Deion Sanders and his convoy to Colorado. This season, as Brown is set to make his first appearance in Black and Gold uniform with his already revamped line at CU, Shedeur Sanders can expect to get sacked a lot less.
