Deion Sanders, coach for the Colorado Buffaloes, has had a multi-faceted career. The 56-year-old NFL Hall of Famer has been making the news long before he debuted as the head coach for the Buffaloes. There’s no doubt about the fact that Sanders has established himself as one of America’s greatest athletes with a very successful career. But there’s a facet of his career that many fans have no clue about.

Coach Prime, as fans call him, is an inspiration to millions. He’s been able to conquer two sports in a single career span. The 2-time Super Bowl winner has also played a World Series tournament in the MLB. Though his name has a lot of accolades under it, newer fans might not even be aware of the reason why his time with the Yankees was cut so short.

The New York Yankees signed Sanders in the year 1988. From there, the fans expected to see him pave a path to glory as he was a part of one of the MLB’s best teams. Unfortunately, the dream was short-lived as he was released from the team 2 years after he joined. Though there were multiple reasons why he quit, one of them was difficulty in time management.

His teammates had a lot to say about his performance during his term. Apparently, they thought that he’s more of a better fit in the NFL and MLB was just something he “wanted to try out.” In retrospect, his teammates were probably right as Coach Prime had one of his lowest batting averages ever.

Furthermore, he had a rare spat with the former Chicago White Sox catcher, Carlton Fisk where he apparently brought up a racial issue that offended the Hall of Famer. Fisk said, “Now he comes up the second time and he wants to make it a racial issue. There’s no racial issue involved. It’s professional etiquette.” Thus, it is safe to say that Sanders had a rocky time in his baseball career.

Yankees legend Ron Guidry had an honest opinion to say about Sanders, “Deep down inside, I think he knew football was his game. So I don’t know if he really gave 100% to make it in baseball. ” He proved himself right when Sanders went on to record 89 tackles in 31 games in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons, an all-time great performance. Furthermore, he recorded eight interceptions for 205 yards and two touchdowns. But his interest wasn’t the only factor that played a role in his departure.

Coach Prime and his legal conflict between the Yankees and the Falcons

Deion Sanders had a lot going on behind the scenes as a legal war unfurled right in front of his eyes. The Falcons wanted the two-sport player to not join the Yankees again and threatened to sue the baseball team if they reinstated Sanders’ contract on the grounds of damages and relief. This led to an increase in a lot of complications and legal troubles for the talented athlete.

There was a long legal battle between the two parties that resulted in Sanders being stuck in a tough spot. After everything got resolved, Sanders ended up back in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons and he must be grateful for it. After the Yankees granted him his exit, Sanders went on to take a two-week vacation. But he ended up missing the mandatory minicamp and was fined a staggering amount of $10,000. Thus, it marked the end of his two-year career with the Yankees in 1990.

There was no doubt that Sanders was a remarkable athlete who was able to demonstrate his talent in two sports at once. But maybe the pressure of being able to keep up to both paces got too much for him and he had to end up choosing this or that. Though he ended up leaving the Yankees, he still continued to strive to be one of the NFL’s most inspirational players.

How did the departure from the Yankees affect Coach Prime’s legacy?

It’s tough to say how Sanders’ future might’ve looked like if he had stayed with the Yankees for a longer period. There was a good possibility that he could’ve ended up being one of the best in the league. But even with his departure, he still didn’t stop with the sort of impact he had with his plays in the NFL.

Even with the unfortunate exit, he would’ve still gone on to play a World Series and be a 2-time Super Bowl Champion. The fact of the matter is that even if his time with the Yankees was short, he would’ve still been Coach Prime with nothing to tarnish his up-and-coming legacy. Today, Coach Prime exists as a symbol of hope to millions of athletes. He has proved to the people that with the right mentality and determination, you can conquer the world and then some more.
