Deion Sanders, the coach for the Colorado Buffaloes, is having a tough time with the team currently. The 56-year-old NFL Hall of Famer debuted as a coach with the Buffs this season when he signed a 5-year contract. He’s one of the most decorated athletes in American history, but his prowess as a coach was doubted before he even stepped on the field.
With many describing him as “just another celebrity coach,”?Sanders had much to prove through the performance of his team. He helped the team get 3 consecutive wins at the very beginning and established himself as a coach that’s here to stay. Coach Prime’s 2 sons, Shedeur and Shilo Sanders, are both a part of the squad and have been dominating the NCAA league with their consistent performances. But with Shedeur’s arrogant move in a match, the Colorado Buffaloes have been under a lot of fire and Deion Sanders has been left to bear the brunt of it all.
How did Shedeur Sanders’ arrogance prove to be the cause of the Buffs’ downfall?

On October 8, 2023, the Colorado Buffaloes faced off against the Arizona State Sun Devils and changed the entire trajectory of the upcoming season. The Buffs managed to secure a win by a score of 27-24 but their performance in the game was nothing more than average. But the game didn’t become a controversy because of how the Buffs played, it became a controversy for what Shedeur did after the win.
Shedeur was being booed by the Arizona fans throughout the game. The fans were chanting “overrated” at him whenever he’d have to throw out the pass. This obviously affected the 21-year-old quarterback and he decided to fire back at the relentless fans with an arrogant gesture. He walked toward the Arizona fans and flashed his expensive watch as an indication of his team’s superiority after the win.
The move was heavily criticized by the NFL community, who deemed it unsportsmanlike, but one can understand Shedeur’s point of view as well. He was being attacked consistently by the Arizona fans who would not let it go and thus, they got a taste of their own medicine, which tasted bitter, shockingly enough. Additionally, the team was heavily judged for their poor plays throughout the game but most of the hate was targeted at Shedeur. It is apparent that when a teammate gets targeted by the media, the entire team’s morale goes down as a whole.
Stanford Cardinal’s revenge on Shedeur Sanders
While the Arizona match ended in a win for the Buffaloes, Coach Prime wasn’t too happy with his team. He didn’t celebrate the win too much as he thought their performance had a lot of holes in it. Sanders said, “Wonderful win ? we played like hot garbage. I’m trying to figure this out. Sick of it. I really am.”?Thus, the team was looking to make drastic changes to their gameplay ahead of their game against the Stanford Cardinal.

The game between the two teams was an interesting one. The Buffaloes displayed exceptional skills until halftime with a lead over Stanford of 29 points. But what happened next was the biggest upset that the team has ever been subjected to. Stanford was able to make a record-breaking comeback and managed to take over the 29-point lead and ultimately won the match with a score of 46-43. If this wasn’t enough, the Cardinal players went the extra mile to rub salt over the wound by imitating Shedeur’s controversial watch move and showing it to the Colorado fans.
The famous quote, “If you can give it, you gotta take it back as well. Otherwise don’t give it,” applies in the Shedeur situation. What Stanford did was a petty move, but that is the essence of sports. It is highly competitive, and at times, athletes do tend to get personal with each other. But it is this sort of hurt that shapes a player through the forges of fire and helps him be the best athlete he can be. There’s no doubt that Shedeur has learned from his mistake, but it will also help in making him a man with the player’s mindset. As he tries to make a major comeback for his team, it will be interesting to see how his attitude toward the game changes.
The Colorado Buffaloes’ preparations against the UCLA Bruins
The Buffaloes will have much to prove ahead of their matchup against the UCLA Bruins on October 29. Coach Prime’s team has a 4-3 record this season, and it is majorly upsetting. The Colorado Buffaloes were one of the obvious favorites to win the championship this year, but their past few games have shattered the fans’ expectations.

Coach Prime made an explosive entry into the NCAA when he led the Buffs to a victory against the TCU Horned Frogs in his debut match. This game set the precedent that Coach Prime could very well be one of the pivotal factors that could help lead the Buffaloes to a championship win this season. But alas, after a 3-0 victory streak, things went downhill for the team, as well as the 2-time Super Bowl-winning coach.
Ahead of their match against the UCLA Bruins, Deion Sanders Jr., could be seen telling Shedeur Sanders, “You can?t smile no more. Don?t wear no jewelry no more.” The advice will come in handy, as he needs to lead the team to the comeback that they so desperately need. Coach Prime hasn’t lost faith in his team yet and neither have the fans. The road to recovery will be full of bumps, but what good is a victory if it doesn’t make you shed blood, sweat, and tears?
