Is Ryan Day's criticism of Lincoln Riley justified, or is he just deflecting from his own issues?

Nobody is safe from the eyes and the curses of Paul Finebaum! It looks like the Kraken of the college football world had his fill by chewing on the fallacies of Coach Prime and Lincoln Riley. Onto the next scapegoat, which is unfortunately the leader of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Ryan Day.

Paul Finebaum of ESPN seems to be going all out to tear down the glories that college football coaches stand on. Coach Prime is a beloved figure for both Colorado and the community and yet, Finebaum had no difficulty in calling him a “celebrity parading around as a coach.” The humiliation that Lincoln Riley had to endure was by far worse since Finebaum went out of his way to term his time with the USC Trojans as “terrible.” It’s time for a new head in the guillotine and Ryan Day was picked by Finebaum to be his next subject as his words act as the axe that befalls heavy on the neck.

On the 24th July episode of the ‘ESPN College Football’ show, Paul Finebaum came on to add yet another controversial take to the tally of insults he’s had for college football coaches this month. While debating whether the Oregon Ducks or the Ohio State Buckeyes will have the better season, what Finebaum had to say left everyone’s jaws wide open, including the likes of Chris Russo and Stephen A. Smith.

Despite choosing Ohio to have a better future this year, Finebaum spoke about Ryan Day specifically and added how he hasn’t proven his worth yet, saying, ” I think you have to go to Ohio State because of their talent now. I think the one deficiency they have, the guy we just heard from Ryan Day. He’s yet to prove very much to me other than he can put a gaudy record up with some of the best talent in the country and still manage to blow some of the biggest games of the year but Oregon probably is the team you have to be careful about.” When it comes to critiquing coaches these days, Finebaum has been having a field “day”, pun intended, but now it seems like it’s a bit that the ESPN analyst likes to do rather than give actual insights. Moreover, it’s interesting to see that just days before this statement, Finebaum suggested the removal of Day from the team if he’s not able to defeat Michigan in their 4th showdown.

Ryan Day “ought” to be gone, suggests Paul Finebaum

The game that the Buckeyes played against the Georgia Bulldogs cost Day a lot and to date, exists as a spot on his tie that just won’t wash away. Additionally, the fact that the Michigan Wolverines have been defeating them consecutively for the past 3 years also puts his credibility in question. But that still doesn’t take away anything from the fact that Day has had an amazing record of 56-8 since his joining in 2018, which should be proof enough that he is a good coach who doesn’t deserve the outcries from Finebaum, much alone let him say that he should be fired.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Ryan Day's criticism of Lincoln Riley justified, or is he just deflecting from his own issues?

Have an interesting take?

Finebaum highlighted how the Wolverines would be a weak team to play this year since Harbaugh and the best players of the team have transferred to the NFL but if Ohio still can’t do it, Day should be made to pack his bags. He said, “Nobody has a record like him except you can’t choke the biggest game of the year and to me, if he can’t beat Michigan this year when he’s got probably the best team in the country along with Georgia after Harbaugh leaves, after all those great players depart after a National Championship, he ought to be gone. I mean it’s as simple as that.” Thus, the pressure has never been higher for Day to lead his team better than ever and as an incentive to win, prove Finebaum wrong and make him swallow his words along with his pride.
