Is the NCAA going soft on Sherrone Moore, or is this just a non-issue blown out of proportion?

Is a possible suspension stemming from a Level 2 violation awaiting Sherrone Moore, as nearly the whole football talks about him deleting a thread of 52 text messages with disgraced staffer Conner Stalions in October 2023? Yes, that was the day when the news broke on the internet about his involvement in the Wolverines’ sign-stealing operation.

Being considered a potential “repeat violator” by the NCAA would not be on anyone’s list. NCAA did look into the claims that Moore was contacting recruits during COVID-19, which was a dead-recruiting period and hence was not allowed. Well, for the present claim, Paul Finebaum has a view. What is it?

The first thing about the draft that stood out was it laid out the extent of the illicit in-person scouting scheme that Michigan had operated from 2021 to 2023. The draft cites 58 instances of illegal in-person off-campus scouting. It included 53 games and 13 opponents in the year 2022. Another name added to the allegations when the NCAA alleged Moore’s involvement in the Connor Scandal too. The talk about Sherrone Moore facing NCAA sanctions in the Connor Stalions scandal is getting really serious. Moore is one of seven members from last year’s staff accused of violating NCAA rules in connection to a sign-stealing Scandal revealed last season according to the NCAA notice. With that came the opinion of much talked about analyst Paul Finebaum who, when asked on an ESPN College Football team interview posted on their Official YouTube channel on August 5th, “big deal or not a big deal?” (about the charges against Sherrone Moore).

He replied, “I do not think it is a big deal. I am struggling to remember anything other than the fact that you have to stop your golf round yesterday because of the lightning.” Pointing towards it is not a big deal at all if the accusations and downplay are true. He goes on to quote Charlie Baker, the president of the NCAA, back when Michigan won the national championship. Back then, the president said they won “fair and square”. Coming back to the present day, he adds the lawyers are going to remember that time if “Michigan gets caught in the crosshairs.” It is going to be an interesting stake to look at both from the angle of the NCAA President’s previous statements and Moore’s reply to all the accusations.

How strong is the said claim?

Facing a Level 1 violation charge is a serious issue for sure. As it claims, a “pattern of noncompliance within the football program.” It is grave as it threatens the integrity of the NCAA Collegiate Model. The said violation that claims that Moore has deleted the texts with Stalions is a violation. When asked about the consequences that Moore might face, Pete Thamel, in the same ESPN interview posted on August 5th said,I would think Chiron Moore faces a short suspension if you look at the history of this stuff at the maximum um to go through sort of the Matrix of what could happen to Michigan in this greeny I don’t think they’re going to have any type of postseason ban.” Indicating that this could result in a show-cause penalty for him and also a possible suspension for the HC.

According to the claims made by NCAA invigilators, Stalions is said to have removed the computer hard drives from Michigian football offices in October 2023 and also included him giving a Michigian player a sheet of opponent play calls. Both of them are grave Level 1 violations, bringing in serious charges. Let us see how far the said claim goes and what would be the repercussions, as Moore is taking deep breaths at the time.
