Ouch! Adverse predictions about Shedeur Sanders have cast a shadow on the future of the Colorado Buffaloes quarterback. After speculation over dropping late in the 2025 NFL Draft, it’s time for some reality check about Deion Sanders’ son’s Heisman Trophy dreams. ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum sees no ray of hope. While the analyst is confident about Shedeur’s performance in the Heisman race, he seems to have second thoughts on the chances of a “terrible” performance that Deion Sanders’ team will likely put up. As Coach Prime will spare no effort in getting Shedeur to win the trophy, in case he fails, will Travis Hunter stand a chance?
It’s difficult to forget the Colorado Buffaloes’ 4-8 record. But hardly anyone expected their disastrous last season to create a ripple effect on Shedeur’s Heisman dreams. Finebaum dropped in to burst the bubble. Despite the ESPN analyst’s optimistic outlook and belief in the Buffs QB sensation’s talent, the team factor may pose a challenge. With little sugarcoating, Finebaum boldly claimed on The Paul Finebaum Show, “You start off with big numbers. I mean, Shedeur Sanders, could he get around the fact that his father’s team is going to be terrible? I don’t think so, no.”
Finebaum did not just drop in a random statement—facts back up his analysis. According to ESPN’s Football Power Index, Colorado is ranked near the bottom of the Big 12. The projected win total for the Buffaloes is 5.5. But no matter what happens, Shedeur will have his father’s back to bag the Heisman.

As a former Pac-12 HC told The Athletic, “I think Deion’s going to try to win Shedeur the Heisman.” But what will happen if Deion’s plan goes awry?
Shedeur’s absence creates an opening for Hunter
In case their favorite quarterback is out of the race, Colorado will still have some hope. Courtesy for this goes to their dual-threat: Travis Hunter and his superpower. His two-way talent stands at an advantage. While in the last season, Hunter put himself in a suitable spot as a shutdown corner, this season, he only needs to showcase his impact as a wide receiver.
Now comes the present scenario that might prove to be a boon in Hunter’s case. Carson Beck, the QB, was unlucky not to have a standout year in 2023. The same applies to Quinn Ewers, who, as another favorite, has struggled to stay healthy. If both star QBs fail to meet the expectations, it will be the turn of Colorado’s two-way threat.
Hence, even if Shedeur is out of the race, Deion Sanders will have enough reasons to celebrate. If Hunter grabs the Heisman trophy, he will be the first primary defender to win this prestigious award since 1997. All eyes are on Travis!
