College football has done it again. Oregon Ducks is under scrutiny after it was alleged that the team had some ‘back channel’ communications with Rodney Hill before he entered the portal. Why is this a problem? Because coaches from other schools are not allowed to contact athletes until they have entered the transfer portal. This rule also extends to indirect contact made by third parties on the athlete’s behalf- family members, coaches, advisors, former teammates, etc.

Discussing the matter, ‘Blue Bloods Bias’ wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “REPORT: Oregon is being accused of TAMPERING with a Florida State player… In December, FSU RB Rodney Hill entered the Transfer Portal after an NIL Dispute. An FSU reporter is now alleging that Hill was in contact with a program BEFORE he entered the portal.”

“247Sports’ Zach Blostein claims that Hill’s camp reached out to Oregon, & there was communication via back channels on how much Oregon would pay him… Why Oregon? The two sides were already familiar with each other, as the current Oregon RB Coach was at FSU in 2020.”

While the former Florida State University athlete ultimately signed with the Miami Hurricanes, these new revelations have shocked many. Further, as per the tweet, Hill was a part of some really important games for FSU while these back-channel communications were going on. “Keep in mind that the whole time, Rodney Hill was still on the FSU team, practicing for the bowl game, & NOT in the Portal… Once FSU Head Coach Mike Norvell reportedly found out about this, Hill officially departed the program.”

It seems the coach and Hill argued about the violation as well as the latter’s NIL and after that, he departed from the program. But did you know the coach was once all praises for Hill? Back in March 2023, the athlete earned the nickname ‘Tornado’ by Norvell. The nickname was a result of his movement in the open field.

Stacked with talent, including the formidable Trey Benson, Hill bided his time on the bench. When Benson was out, the RB saw it as an opportunity to step into the role. As per the reports, Hill allegedly demanded a NIL package greater than what his FSU predecessor, Benson, had received in 2023. He wanted $500k in NIL opportunities. Hill was rumored to favor Oregon.

In fact, a similar situation took place with multiple Florida State Players, who entered the portal after NIL disputes. Star DE Patrick Payton was one of them. As per reports, he demanded $1M in NIL.

Coming back to Hill, he ultimately chose Miami, a team currently facing challenges on the field. While the chosen team may not be at the same competitive level as Oregon or FSU, it is assumed that Hill may have secured an attractive NIL package. However, details are sparse. He headed to Miami with three years of eligibility. It is also said that he will not take a scholarship spot and will be a walk-on.
