Saturday’s face-off between the ninth-ranked Sooners and the 22nd-ranked Cowboys in Stillwater, Oklahoma, marks the final Bedlam matchup in the foreseeable future. Since 1910, every college football season has included an infamous Oklahoma-Oklahoma State matchup. However, the ritualistic rivalry will cease to exist at least for the meantime, since Oklahoma is set to transition from the Big 12 to the Southeastern Conference next season.
The Sooners’ six-year conference championship streak ended last season after a loss to Oklahoma State. Coach Lincoln Riley departed for USC shortly after, and quarterbacks Caleb Williams and Spencer Rattler transferred. Despite hiring Brent Venables as the new coach, the Sooners aren’t favored to win the conference this year, and sports analysts second that.

In the latest episode of the College GameDay podcast, Rece Davis furnished his audience with his prediction for the significant Big 12 matchup. “I like Oklahoma, not down on them at all, but usually Oklahoma State finds a way not to win this game,” said Davis, sounding his support for the Cowboys. He went ahead to predict a ‘major upset’ with, “I’m also going to call the outright win for Oklahoma State.”

He alludes to Saturday’s match being the last Bedlam match and states that even though the general emotion might be inclined towards sending “the Sooners off with a fabulous parting gift,’ however, like the odds, he too acknowledges the more prominent possibility for the Pokes to walk away with the win. The Sooners (7-1, 4-1 Big 12) recently suffered a 38-33 road loss to Kansas, while the Cowboys (6-2, 4-1) were able to clinch a 45-13 victory over Cincinnati last week. Oklahoma State has managed to put together a four-game winning streak after a 2-2 start to the season, with a major portion of credit resting with the team’s star running back.

Oklahoma Sooners coach Brent Venables emphasized the importance of better tackling for the team this week, stating that if Sooners failed to tackle more effectively than last week, Gordon could establish himself as a college football rushing leader. He has the strength to break through defenders and the speed to outpace them. What’s particularly impressive is his patience, especially for a player of his size. In Venables’s words, “He can run right through you and he can run right by you.”
