Former Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa’s request for an additional year of eligibility has been denied. Despite a compelling plea from coach Nick Saban and Alabama to the NCAA, the waiver was not granted. Consequently, Tagovailoa, who recently entered the transfer portal, will now shift his focus to preparing for the NFL draft. Upon entering the portal, Tagovailoa had communicated to ESPN that he had submitted a reinstatement waiver seeking a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA.

Tagovailoa, the younger brother of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, played for the Alabama Crimson Tide and later for the Maryland Terrapins, becoming the Big Ten’s all-time passing leader with 11,256 yards in four years. The waiver denial was centered around his participation in five games during his freshman year at Alabama, exceeding the redshirt limit of four games. The case highlighted the school’s failure to track two snaps during the season opener against Duke. Nick Saban’s involvement in Alabama’s proceedings has thrown into sharper relief his “100% access” to internal matters despite retirement.
