Until now, the Chargers have interviewed about 12 candidates, with the most recent additions to the list being David Shaw, Mike Vrabel, and Dan Quinn. However, all these coaches come in with a losing record. Vrabel, for instance, has lost 18 of his last 23 games. Others like Bill Belichick too don’t possess much boastful record in the winning department for the past couple of seasons.
Jim Harbaugh, on the other hand, is the only candidate with an untainted record this season, not to mention the National Championship win. NFL Insider Tom Pelissero is in complete agreement with the opinion. “The guy who’s kept winning ever, he’s been Jim Harbaugh,” he asserted. This, paired with the Chargers being his alma mater, and Dean Spanos and Co. having good relations with Harbaugh puts him in the spotlight for consideration.

Jim Harbaugh’s dynamics with the Spanos
Dean Spanos’ sons, AG and John Spanos are the scene stakeholders of the business side of Chargers. Hence, any no-no from their end would send Harbaugh’s offer right out the window. Albert Breer on the Dan Patrick Show believed that “I think a lot of it’s going to come down to how it’s set up and whether not he’s comfortable with that.”
“So everything there too, from my understanding, has been very positive between the Chargers and Jim Harbaugh. The Spanos family knows him going back to his playing days. So there’s not a lot of surprises,” stated Pelissero. Hence, Harbaugh securing a position with the Chargers is “almost” positive. It’s the Spanos family dynamics that put the reluctance in the situation.

Harbaugh has faith in the Chargers and Dean Spanos. His amiable relations with the Spanos family might be the safety net he is falling on. Yet, John Spanos’ opinion on their ‘favorable candidate’ would only become clear once the Chargers issue an official offer to Jim Harbaugh.
