The City of Brotherly Love has hosted the Army-Navy game 90 times out of 123 games. But just last year, both the programs declared that there would be a “five-year cycle” that would take the game somewhere else. 

President of the Naval Academy Athletic Association and Director of Athletics, Chet Gladchuk, said, “Our destinations over the next five years provide the Academies with an opportunity to share the economic impact, history, and tradition of Army-Navy with a number of communities in diverse geographic areas.” This year, the game will happen in Foxboro, and the subsequent games will take place in mid-Atlantic cities. They include Washington, Baltimore, East Rutherford, and Philadelphia.

Overview of the Long-Standing Traditional Rivalry between Army and Navy

The first time the Army and Navy met on the field was in 1890 when the Midshipmen delivered a blowout 24-0 loss to the Black Knights. But it lay dormant from 1894 to 1898 after a Navy rear admiral and Army brigadier general got into a serious argument. The rivalry was on and off until 1930 when it became a full-fledged rivalry that continued even through WWII.

In the last meeting on December 10, 2022, Army won the game 20-17. The next game in Massachusetts will mark the 124th time they’re meeting each other. As of now, Navy leads the rivalry with 62-54-7.
