Is Deion Sanders the best thing to happen to CU Buffs football in the last decade?

To shut down talks of Deion Sanders leaving Colorado after his sons shift to the league for once and for all, the Colorado athletic department is adding fuel to the fire of rumors of Deion Sanders’s contract extension. Per a report by Scott Proctor from the Coloradoan, Deion Sanders received a $250,000 bonus from the CU athletic department.

Sanders to earn an employee recognition bonus for the national recognition he has brought to the university and athletics department,” the report read. In the 2023 season, Colorado sold out for the first time in decades, earning the school revenue of approximately $343 million in ‘earned media’. Hence, it was a special bonus from Colorado AD Rick George. Looking at this, the speculations of Deion Sanders getting a contract extension are on the rise.

Based on this, RK and Jake in the DNVR Buffs podcast predicted that “We’re hoping that Coach Prime gets a big extension at some point during this season or you know at some point. In the next, I guess, 365 days,” boldly claimed the podcast host. Currently, Deion Sanders’ contract with Colorado is a hefty business deal.

His annual salary jumped to an astonishing $5.5 million, thanks to his 5 years, $29.5 million contract, which skyrocketed his net worth to a whopping $45 million. And this does not include all the incentives and bonuses that Coach Prime gets, including a private jet. However, per a special clause in their contract, after the third year of this agreement, there’s a provision for renegotiation. This means that the doors for negotiations will open in 2024 for CU and Coach Prime.

Looking at all the glitz and glamor that Coach Prime has brought to the Buffs, the university is highly likely to extend a negotiation on Coach Prime’s way. However, is Prime ready for it?

Does Coach Prime want a contract extension with CU?

The rumors of Deion Sanders leaving Colorado are higher than ever. Despite all that, several sources and people have claimed that “Coach Prime is going nowhere,” like Jordan Seaton. Even Deion Sanders has confidently said, indirectly of course, that he would not be leaving Colorado anytime soon. But the real question is, how long will Deion Sanders be staying in Colorado, given all the fame he has garnered?

When he just came in to coach Colorado, Coach Prime had said that ‘he would be careful’ when asked about a contract extension with Colorado. “That’s a wonderful gesture. I love it. But I’m smart enough to know and old and wise enough to know that it can flip on you instantaneously. The fan only blows when you hot. My mama said that not me. So if y’all want to get mad, get mad at my mama,” Coach Prime said.

Although it was a sneaky way of saying there would be a lot to negotiate before Coach Prime agrees to the extension. But this was a long time ago before Deion Sanders had formed an affinity with Colorado.
