Formеr Colorado Buffaloеs safеty Xaviеr Smith has stirrеd up controvеrsy with rеcеnt criticism aimed at Coach Prime and Co. In an intеrviеw with Thе Athlеtic’s Max Olson, Smith airеd his dissatisfaction with Sandеrs’ approach, claiming that Sandеrs advisеd him to “hit thе portal” and doubtеd his potential to еarn a spot.
Smith’s frustration was palpable through his candid rеmarks, when he said, “I was actually gеtting mad, likе tеars coming to my еyеs. Bеcausе, bro, you nеvеr еvеn triеd to gеt to know mе.” Whilе such rеmarks of Smith arе going viral, raising spеculations ovеr Dеion Sandеrs’ coaching stylе, his QB son Shеdеur is not rеady to hold back in addressing Smith’s rеmarks.
Taking to X, Shedeur offered an honest assessment of Smith’s comments, stating, “Ion even remember him tbh. Bro had to be very mid at best.” Shedeur’s blunt remark portrayed the fact that only those players who show up with hard work get the chance to play. Anything less will not be entertained by the Buffaloes. As per Smith, he entered the 2022 season to recover from the injuries he sustained in the previous season. Smith had broken his leg during his senior year and later suffered a hamstring injury during the season.

He expressed his optimism before a meeting with Coach Prime, hoping that Sanders would provide guidance and support to the younger players, including himself, as he was only a redshirt freshman at the time. However, Smith felt discouraged during the meeting and expressed his perception that the Buffaloes had given up on him. “He was destroying guys’ confidence and belief in themselves,” Smith said. “The way he did it could’ve been done with a little more compassion.” As per Smith, feeling dismissed and unacknowledged by Coach Sanders, he ultimately made the decision to transfer to Austin Peay.
Notably, Shedeur is not the only one who is speaking out against such allegations. Freshman three-star offensive lineman Tyler Brown took to X to defend his team and Coach Prime.

Tyler Brown joined forces with Shedeur in defending CU
Brown expressed frustration with negative articles about his coach and the program and emphasized the support he received during challenging times. “Absolutely frustrating seeing all these negative articles about my coach and our program,” Brown tweeted. “You work hard and you will be rewarded! Coach Prime and the wonderful staff at CU checked on me every single day and made sure I was okay when I couldn’t play! Don’t believe the lies.”
While the Buffaloes are joining forces to defend their program, Deion Sanders was notably very direct in his approach upon taking the helm of the Buffaloes and particularly following the 2023 spring game. According to The Athletic, Sanders stated, “You all know that we’re gonna move on from some of the team members and we’re gonna reload and get some kids that we really identify with.”

Additionally, he emphasized “hope” during last year’s National Signing Day. “We’re not recruiting just any ordinary Tom, Dick, and Harry. We recruited individuals who can light up the scoreboard and prevent touchdowns,” declared Coach Prime. “We’re coming. We’re serious about that. Hope is in the house. Hope is in the air. Hope is in the city. Hope is in the community.”
Now, as criticism mounts, these voices from within the program offer a different perspective, emphasizing the positive experiences and support system present within the CU football community.
