Following Jim Harbaugh‘s departure to the Los Angeles Chargers on January 24th, the Michigan Wolverines underwent a major coaching transition under the leadership of head coach Sherrone Moore. With Moore previously serving as the team’s offensive coordinator and interim head coach during the 2023 season, his promotion marked a swift change in direction. 

Notably, the defensive coaching staff at the University of Michigan saw a complete overhaul, with every member parting ways with the program. This shake-up reflects a broader trend of coaching changes observed across collegiate football programs. Harbaugh’s move to the NFL prompted a significant restructuring, with several members of his coaching staff following suit. Josh Pate recently weighed in on the pressure that has been accumulating on Moore’s shoulders as he prepares to rebuild Michigan in a Post-Harbaugh era.  

“There are a lot of flaws in that program”: Josh Pate on Michigan

Jim Harbaugh, upon his return from Los Angeles following his acceptance of the Chargers’ head coaching position, expressed his desire for a cohesive relationship between Michigan and his new NFL team. With Martindale’s addition, Michigan’s defensive staff becomes increasingly intertwined with the Chargers, featuring former Wolverines like Jesse Minter, Mike Elston, Ben Herbert, and now, Maurice Linguist. Josh Pate recently acknowledged the Michigan situation, he highlighted that even though, they just won the national title and there are a lot of flaws in that program.” According to Pate, regardless of what the current situation is the right thing for Sherrone Moore to do is to put his nose down and he gets to work.” Because it is Moore’s program and he should “fix it”.

In the wake of Don Martindale’s appointment as Michigan’s defensive coordinator under the helm of new head coach Sherrone Moore. This development marks a notable adjustment in the coaching roster under Moore’s leadership. With these transitions, Moore faces the task of filling key roles on the defensive coaching staff, including positions for a defensive line coach, linebackers coach, and secondary coach.

Michigan coaching staff upgrade under Moore 

Michigan’s head coach, Sherrone Moore, is in the process of finalizing a new defensive line coach and searching for a replacement for secondary coach Steve Clinkscale. Greg Scruggs, previously with Wisconsin, is emerging as a top candidate for the defensive line coach position, known for his coaching experience and recruiting prowess, which will be crucial in filling the void left by Mike Elston’s departure. Another contender is Lamar Morgan, the former defensive coordinator at Louisiana, who brings a wealth of coaching knowledge and familiarity with the Ravens’ defensive system.

His potential role as a co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach adds to his appeal for Michigan football. As they also seek a linebacker’s coach, the expansion of the coaching staff indicates the program’s commitment to maintaining player retention. Greg Scruggs transitioned from director of player development at Cincinnati to D-line coach at Wisconsin, while Lamar Morgan has experience as a defensive coordinator and cornerback coach. Michigan football’s ongoing focus lies in staff development and recruitment efforts to ensure they remain competitive in the college football landscape.
