J.J. McCarthy, the quarterback for the Michigan Wolverines, will have to face the brunt of the management’s cheating scandal. The 20-year-old has been picked as the Wolverines’ candidate for the Heisman Trophy this year. The Heisman Trophy is awarded to the best player in the NCAA, and by the looks of it, he is definitely not a fan favorite with the other voters for the cup.

Gregg Doyel, the sports columnist for the Indy Star Sports, is one of the 870 media voters who has outrightly said that he won’t be voting for McCarthy this year. Currently, Michael Penix Jr. leads the race against the Heisman odds, but McCarthy isn’t exactly lagging behind.

The Michigan Wolverines have had an unbelievable season so far. They are currently standing on an unbeatable 9-0 record and rank in the 3rd position in the college football playoff rankings. There’s no doubt that McCarthy’s performance has played a huge role in the team’s success, but it seems like none of that will be considered by the Heisman voters because of the infamous sign-stealing scandal.

McCarthy, impressively enough, has completed over 2134 passing yards and is averaging 10.4 yards per attempt, making him the second-best passer in the country. But while he can win the competition by the end of this season, it wouldn’t matter because, in the eyes of the fans, all the glory of the Wolverines has been conquered through unfair means. Gregg Doyel explained his reasons for not picking McCarthy as the winner, and it seems as if a majority of the fans would tend to side with him.

Why will Gregg Doyel not vote for McCarthy?

After the sign-stealing scandal committed by Jim Harbaugh, the entire Michigan team was targeted by the public. Suddenly, their unbeatable season didn’t appeal to the masses anymore, as it was obviously part of a major plot of cheating. It’s fair to say that the management flaws will weigh down on the shoulders of McCarthy as he tries to take home the Heisman Trophy.

Gregg Doyel said, “This is not J.J. McCarthy?s fault. But thanks to the Michigan coaching staff, he will pay the price. At least on my ballot. Because unlike Jim Harbaugh, I plan to sleep tonight with a clear conscience.” Thus, he doesn’t think it’s fair to vote for McCarthy when other quarterbacks from the other teams have worked hard to play fair and square this season. It’s going to be a sad finish to the Wolverines’ season as McCarthy and the players try to play for their innocence.
