Michigan Scandal: What Bylaws Have Been Broken & What Penalty Can Be Meted Out by NCAA?

A very grave incident has occurred in the world of NCAA. It is so grave that it is quite intriguing. Some rules have been broken, and there is now widespread talk on social media. The University of Michigan’s football staffer Connor Stalions and HC Jim Harbaugh are now in a serious situation and are being investigated by the NCAA for violating one of the strict laws.

Now, the scandal is quite deep, and it is quite natural that when someone does something wrong, they must face the consequences. The NCAA  got to know about this infringement, and at the moment they are not aware of who leaked the information. But the University and the staff are fated to suffer the consequences for their mistake. What have they done?

Has the University of Michigan broken a bylaw?

The University of Michigan’s football staffer, Conner Stalions, has reportedly violated the NCAA’s bylaw 11.6.1. This law strictly prohibits the in-person, in-season scouting of future opponents, and Stalions is also allegedly accused of illegally taping the opponent’s signals. Someone seems to have reported this matter to the NCAA, so it is not quite certain if the university has actually broken that law.

They are under intense investigation regarding this matter. Stalions is also accused of purchasing NCAA tickets and distributing them to other people residing in different parts of the country. And he did so in order to scout other teams and record their sidelines. This is strictly against the NCAA rules.

Two investigations together have definitely put Michigan in a tight spot. Nevertheless, if the reports were found to be true, the consequences would be grave, and it could be anything! The Head Coaches can also be punished for violations even if they have reasons to deny.

Consequences of the crime for Conner Stalions

Pursuant to NCAA bylaw 11.6.1, it is illegal to do any in-person scouting during the regular season. For Michigan, if it is established that the school violated this rule, the punishment can literally be anything, including cancellation of scholarships, forfeited games, suspended postseason, a suspension for both Coach and university administrations, a fine on the administrative body, or a mixture of all. Football staffer Stalions is currently in suspension due to the accusation.

Punishment should be commensurate with the offense committed, and since Michigan gained a competitive advantage while violating the rules, they should be denied any such benefit. Head coaches may now also get penalized by this new strict liability rule of the NCAA despite having their plausible denial. What do you think will happen?
