The next superstar of the NFL? That’s probably JJ McCarthy you’re talking about. The QB has set enough records at his former university Michigan to be lauded as one of the best QBs walking into the NFL draft 2024. He has even swept the scouting heads and other coaches in the NFL draft Combine, despite him not taking some tests because of a slight hamstring injury. CBS Sports found it as a perfect opportunity to ask McCarthy, who would be the 3 receivers that he would be excited to throw against.

McCarthy’s choices spoke volumes about the pride he carries being a former Michigan player as he started strong with Jaxon Smith-Njigba, someone he was cheeky to call out. Michigan went 3-0 against Smith-Njigba when he played the WR in their arch-nemesis, Ohio State, in 2022. His accolades list at Ohio was long, one of which was setting a record for most catches in a single season (15) twice. However, he could not beat McCarthy and Co, something which McCarthy was feeling extra proud of being the Michigan Man he is, speaking of rubbing salt in the wound. Smith-Njigba entered the draft after that year, where the Seattle Seahawks picked him as 20th overall. With the Seahawks as well, he did a commendable job with 628 yards and 4 touchdowns.

McCarthy’s choices spoke volumes about the study he has put into the NFL as she started strong with Vikings’ WR Justin Jefferson. Jefferson has shown consistently impressive stats during his 4 seasons at the Vikings. While Jefferson’s numbers dipped down a bit in 2023 as compared to 2022, he still amassed 1074 yards, averaging 15.8 with 5 touchdowns. For his career, he is almost about to cross 6000 yards, averaging 15 with 30 touchdowns.

Las Vegas Raiders WR Davante Adams follow Jefferson on the list. After his 8-season stint with the Packers, Adams is thriving at the Raiders amassing 1114 yards and 8 touchdowns, a bit less compared to 2022’s 1516 yards and 14 touchdowns. But this was not the only interesting part of McCarthy’s picks.

The teams after JJ McCarthy

Two of the three teams whose WRs McCarthy selected are reportedly in talks with the former Michigan QB at the NFL Combine. Raiders and Seahawks have engaged in negotiations with McCarthy ahead of the NFL draft day set in April 2024. Per Raiders.com, Devante Adams’ team holds a highly likely chance to secure McCarthy given their feeble situation with the QB position.

After Jimmy Garoppolo’s suspension, rookie QB Adrian O’Connell filled in his shoes. However, as O’Connell is a rookie himself and the vacancy for a reliable backup QB, the Raiders might solidly consider giving McCarthy a chance. The options with Raiders are relatively slim, with the top pick holders like Bears and Patriots likely to take up the leading QBs like Drake Maye and Caleb Williams. With the franchise placed at pick 13 in the first round, will McCarthy be a perfect choice for them?
