The University of Michigan’s football program has taken a bold step into a new era. With the departure of Jim Harbaugh, their former head coach, the squad wasted no time in orchestrating a seamless transition.
As the 21st head coach in the football program’s storied history, they appointed offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore. It took Michigan only 48 hours to gain the commitment of the new coach on a lower contract. The difference in the contract amount between Moore and Harbaugh helped the Michigans to save a fortune of $35million.

Moore steps into the head coaching role for Michigan with a unique distinction. He evolved to be the first Wolverines coach to possess a perfect win percentage before officially taking charge. While he had been executing the role of an interim coach in 2023, he guided the maize and blue to an unblemished 4-0 record.
On top of that, Moore exhibited his ability to rally the team in high-stakes matchups through a succession of victories over Penn State, Bowling Green, Ohio State, and Maryland. While his interim success played an influential role in securing the head coach position, the financial aspects of his appointment have been crucial too. As per reports, in contrast to the reported $12.5 million per year contract offered to the former coach, Harbaugh, Moore is set to sign a comparatively modest five-year deal starting at $5.5 million per year. Along with this, he has been offered a base salary of $500,000 and can earn up to $3.5 million in bonuses. With this, the Wolverines are able to save $5 million dollar each year for five consecutive years that will sum up to $35 million.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Michigan had reportedly extended a lucrative contract offer to Harbaugh before approaching Moore. The football program was willing to commit to a substantial 10-year, $12.5 million contract extension for the coach. However, despite the enticing offer from the Wolverines, Harbaugh has thrown a curveball.
He has agreed to make his return to the NFL as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. With this, the financial details of Harbaugh’s contract with the Chargers indicate a raise for the new coach. It has been reported that he will be paid more than the reported $12.5 million offered by the Wolverines, but at the same time, the amount falls short of the initially rumored $18 million. Hence, Harbaugh has expressed his inclination toward the five-year contract with the Chargers, breaking off his highly successful nine-season stint with the Wolverines.
