J.J. McCarthy has avid cheerleaders in college football! Sherrone Moore, the Michigan Wolverines head coach, wasn’t just a source of support that pushed McCarthy to excel further but also boosted his draft stock with glowing praise. Even the then head coach, Jim Harbaugh, declared McCarthy was the “greatest quarterback” in program history.

During an NFL coverage event in March, Moore said McCarthy “can make any type of throw” and highlighted his smartness and wide on-field capabilities. Now all these praises and the championship win pushed him into the Top 5 quarterbacks in the draft. Eventually, the Minnesota Vikings traded up to grab him with their 10th overall pick.

Now, even after the draft, Moore continues to be McCarthy’s biggest support system. Recently, McCarthy, now a Minnesota Viking sporting jersey No. 9, posted his first official photo with a simple Skol (the Vikings’ cheer) caption. Within hours, Moore reposted the photo on his Instagram story, showcasing his never-ending support for McCarthy’s NFL journey.

Moore may be leading the Wolverines as head coach now, but his coaching magic seems to have peaked last year. As the program’s offensive coordinator, he saw the Wolverines achieve a remarkable feat — a national championship title after over 15 years, and that too with an undefeated season (15-0)!

But Moore wasn’t just in the background. He was a constant source of support that pushed McCarthy to ahead.

While rumors suggest Sam Darnold will start training camp as the Vikings’ starting quarterback, McCarthy’s championship experience and first-round draft status give him a fighting chance. And with Moore still hyping him up, McCarthy’s NFL debut is sure to be an exciting one to watch.

Just earlier this week, Sherrone Moore relived their championship victory on the “Big Noon” podcast. He spoke candidly about a nerve-wracking moment during the final game against Alabama, where the pressure reached a peak. Moore described looking up to the sky, silently asking his grandpa for some guidance with a heartfelt, “Need some help here.”  Suddenly, a voice cut through the tension. It was his then-quarterback, McCarthy saying, “Hey, Pops, we got you.” Now, this was the magical phrase that instilled confidence in Moore, who then called the perfect play. The rest, as they say, is history as Michigan dominated Alabama 27-20!

It’s clear the championship run left a lasting impact on Moore, and thus his support for McCarthy still continues. We hope McCarthy replicates that magic in the NFL too. With coaches like Moore and Harbaugh cheering him on, his transition from college to pro football shouldn’t be that difficult.
