Michigan’s former DL coach Greg Scruggs’ tenure ended before it even really began. Nobody wants to stick around to support after the third strike, and Scruggs seems to have made decisions easier for everyone. After being arrested on March 16 allegedly for drunk driving only days after being appointed a Wolverines coach, he gave his resignation notice to head coach Sherrone Moore.
Moore said in a recent statement, “I just received notice that Greg Scruggs has resigned his position, effective immediately. I am unable to comment further as this is a University matter.” Given this latest update, many Michigan fans voiced their approval over the decision for the two parties to part ways. But this also puts the Wolverines in a dire situation, and they need a DL coach as soon as possible.

A recent YouTube upload by The Wolverine: Michigan Football and Basketball delved into the subject of Greg Scruggs and Sherrone Moore. Staff writer Anthony Broome stated his opinion on Scruggs, who could have had a great career in Michigan had he not been involved in driving under the influence and being charged with OWI. Broom said, “Greg Scruggs made a very selfish, personal decision that led him to resigning from a job that he was going to make quite a bit of money.”
Given that this isn’t the first offense by Scruggs behind the wheel, Broome said that while their former DL coach isn’t without talent and capabilities, it would be best for him and Michigan to part ways. He said, “It’s probably best for both sides that they’re parting ways. Now he can focus on getting himself right and Michigan can get a coach that can be a leader of men and can lead by example.” But with Scruggs out of Michigan’s staff, Sherrone Moore has to find a replacement quickly.

Sherrone Moore: Beset with complications
Sherrone Moore’s first run as Michigan’s HC isn’t without complication, even before their spring football game. Entering their first week into spring football training, Moore has to look for a potential replacement. The problem with this coaching staff turnover is that it may affect the effectiveness of their spring transfer portal window. However, given that Michigan has one of the best defenses in the nation, there could be many interested candidates in the queue.

Michigan also recently hired former NFL linebacker Pernell McPhee as their defensive assistant. He played with the Baltimore Ravens for seven seasons in two separate timeframes, during which time he worked under Michigan DC Don Martindale. He could be a prospective candidate to fill in the DL coach role to replace Greg Scruggs. In the meantime, we can only wait and ponder who Moore would bring in to lead the Wolverines’ defensive line.
