As the NFL offseason unfolds, the Los Angeles Chargers under the tutelage of their newly appointed coach have been making some strategic moves within their coaching staff. In a calculated move, the Chargers have chosen to retain special teams coordinator, Ryan Ficken. They have even reportedly blocked him from interviewing with other teams. With this, Harbaugh has set up his team of coordinators with OC Greg Roman, DC Jesse Minter, and now Ficken. In the initial days of the year, Ficken’s future with the Chargers hung in the balance.

According to the reports, it was because Jim Harbaugh attempted to bring his son, Jay, to replace Ficken in the role of special team coordinator. Even though, as per the current developments, the coach’s son could be part of the coaching staff, he will not be taking over Ficken’s role. However, was it the right decision to stick with the 43-year-old coordinator?

In the meanwhile, it has been reported that the New York Giants had attempted to interview Ficken for a potential role with their organization. However, keeping track of the developments outside, the Chargers have blocked the Giants, who fired their special teams coordinator, Thomas McGaughey. While coaching staff changes are common affairs, Harbaugh’s decision to retain Ryan Ficken speaks volumes about the trust the head coach has in him. This brings into light his’ successful stints with the Chargers as he continues his mentorship.

Chargers’ special teams have experienced a remarkable turnaround under Ryan Ficken’s astute leadership. Channeling his guidance within the team members, the rookie wide receiver Derius Davis acquired the title of NFLPA’s Players’ All-Pro Team as a Punt Returner. Under Ficken’s guidance, punter JK Scott too achieved career-high numbers boasting a 46.3-yard average.

Before making his way to the Chargers, Ficken had a long 15-year commitment with the Vikings and also served as their special teams coordinator in 2021. It was amid the 2022 season, that former Chargers HC, Brandon Staley recognized his talent and hired Ficken.

Retaining his hand on the prestigious role, the move suggests the Chargers’ commitment to Ficken after recognizing his immense role in the resurgence of the program. With Harbaugh’s keen eye for coaching and maximizing talent, we look forward to the new and impactful era at the Chargers.
