During his time at Iowa Western Community College, he recorded 38 tackles, including 4.5 sacks and 9 tackles for loss, before transferring to Virginia Tech. Initially starting his college career at Army, Copeland transferred to Iowa Western Community College, where his performance caught the attention of top programs. His performance earned him a transfer to Virginia Tech, where he has continued to impress. Virginia Tech defensive line coach JC Price praised Copeland’s abilities, particularly highlighting his speed and agility. “In Hunger Drills, Copeland showed a lot. That guy can flat-out run and change directions. He was one of the first players to hit 20 miles an hour. We haven’t had a defensive tackle do that since I’ve been here,” Price commented.
