“Kirby Smart doesn’t think too much about Alabama,” was the blunt insult hurled at Kalen DeBoer’s capabilities as a Crimson Tide head coach in Mike Griffith’s report. Per Griffith, Kirby Smart, the head coach of Texas Longhorns, does not apprehend Crimson Tide much now that Nick Saban has retired as the head coach. Several reports claim that the team is anticipated to take over the college football leaderboard now that Michigan and Alabama have had a head coach overhaul. This was a direct seething question at not only Michigan’s Sherrone Moore but also Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer.
Well, the wreck after Nick Saban left Alabama is no secret. What is lesser known, however, is the gradual decline in Alabama’s performance in the last couple of years. Reiterating the issue on a podcast with McElroy & Cubelic, DeBoer stated that the downfall of the Crimson Tide started back when Nick Saban still held the reins as the head coach. “A lot of that turnover happened even before we even stepped foot into the campus. I think at one point numbers might have changed, maybe one or two guys here and there. I think 18 or so guys were already in the portal before Coach Saban even retired. That’s like the nature of college football right now,” DeBoer said. DeBoer has been a hot target for critics since he is considered to be responsible for the slowly uncovering mess at Alabama.

Since Saban took over the head coaching duties in 2009, championships have flowed into Alabama. The same team had been facing trouble in winning the championships. In 2022, Alabama did not become the SEC champions. They did manage to crack the SEC in 2023, however, lost to Michigan in the CFP National Championship. It was a major blow not only to Nick Saban but also to Alabama’s reputation. Mike Griffith, too, agrees that Alabama’s undoing commenced back in Saban’s era.

Mike Griffith backs Kalen DeBoer’s statement
To make things a little less harsh on Kalen DeBoer, DwagNation’s Mike Griffith confirmed his beliefs on Alabama’s downfall starting in 2020, back when Saban led the team. It was in 2020 that the Crimson Tide had won their last championship. Since then, the program has reportedly ‘dropped off’.

DeBoer’s statement proved that players had already left for the portal when Saban was still the head coach. He even confessed that “There’s probably 4-5 guys around really that I got a chance to meet.” Hence, this would be the season that Kalen DeBoer has on his hands to wipe these questions on his head coaching skills clean with Crimson Tide’s records.
