Coach Prime vs. Lincoln Riley: Who's the better mentor for Julian Lewis?

The name of Juju Lewis has taken over the headlines of recruitment by storm. The youngster isn’t even in college yet and he’s already predicted to be the best QB in the class of 2025. As such, he makes for a perfect addition to a team like the Colorado Buffaloes, who is set to lose their star QB, Shedeur, next year when he declares for the Draft. But in an unprecedented move, On3 has undermined Lewis’ talents and ranked him lower than his initial grades, which might affect his reputation among other prospects.

Julian Lewis announced his commitment to the USC Trojans last year but recently, he’s made over 3 visits to the Colorado program and is also being tempted by Auburn University to play for them. The race to acquire Juju has been on but so far, it looks like only Lincoln Riley and Deion Sanders are the leading competitors to sign him. Now that the decision boils down to Lewis’ decommitment or his loyalty to USC, he has been blindsided by On3’s ranking of him which has brought him down one level.

‘Bravo Charlie CFB’ recently shocked everyone by dropping Julian Lewis’ ranking, despite his exceptional record-breaking performance at the Elite 11 event. This news is arising during the rising tensions between both Deion Sanders and USC’s Lincoln Riley as they continue their desperate pursuit to bring the QB to their respective programs.

As per the page, “Julian Lewis has dropped Julian Lewis’s ranking to a 4⭐️ After winning most consistent in the elite 11 camp, and having a great showing at @RivalsCamp , somehow he dropped to the 7th best QB and 44th overall player. We’ve seen On3 lower Colorado commits rankings in the past…” Thus, this can’t mean great news for the youngster since his ranking has been drastically reduced without any botches or mistakes on his end but will it mean anything different for Colorado or USC? Doesn’t seem likely. Moreover, while Lewis’ underwhelming ranking will upset Colorado fans, they sure turned a different shade of rage when On3 released its rankings of both Shedeur and Travis, which were far below the top from where they’re expected to be.

It’s almost bizarre to witness Lewis being downgraded right after he scored a perfect 50 during the Elite 11 event. His score tied the record that was set by NFL’s CJ Stroud in 2022 and yet, On3 didn’t think Lewis was a 5-star QB even then. Moreover, both Shedeur and Travis are predicted to be in the top 5 picks of the 2025 NFL Draft but On3 seriously snubbed them when they released their list of the top 100 players in college football for the 2024 season.

A player who’s a favorite for the Heisman Trophy and is on the cover of the upcoming EA Sports College Football 25 game couldn’t possibly be lesser than a top-5 pick right? Right? Well, that’s exactly what happened with Travis Hunter when he was ranked at number 20 as per the list. Hunter is a generational talent in the class of 2024 and is a two-way player, which just adds to his list of extensive abilities and yet, he didn’t even crack the top-10.

If this wasn’t enough to scratch your head then wait till you see Shedeur’s ranking. The Colorado QB is currently a part of a debate that either puts him at the number 1 or number 2 position, right below Georgia’s Carson Beck. He’s also a favorite for the Heisman Trophy this year and was a notable contender in the 2023 race as well. Ready to see where On3 ranked him? *drumroll* At number 26! All controversy and silly statements aside, Shedeur has been a force to reckon with on the field and this list just goes on to show that On3 tends to underplay some of the best athletes in the league. This, as a result, could mean that Lewis’ demotion shouldn’t be taken too seriously since the rankings clearly can’t be trusted.
