Julian Lewis's $1.1M value—proof that talent trumps legacy in sports?

The son of Deion Sanders won’t be too happy losing out to a player who has yet to enter the world of college football. Julian Lewis is one of the trendiest recruits this year and is being sought after by several schools. Though his inclinations currently inch closer toward Colorado, Auburn, and USC, his final decision to commit is much anticipated by the fans. One thing is for certain, whichever university he decides to play for, he’ll still end up overshadowing the talents of Shilo Sanders, who hasn’t had an exceptional performance on the field yet.

Shilo Sanders, the safety for the Colorado Buffaloes, finished the 2023 season starting all 11 games he played except for missing one out due to an injury. He recorded over 54 solo tackles and 4 forced fumbles with just 1 interception to his name. He has been a vital part of the team in the last year but his numbers pale in comparison to where Julian Lewis’ credibility currently stands. Juju was rated as a 5-star QB and gave an exceptional record-breaking performance at the Elite 11, becoming only the second QB after C.J. Stroud to receive a perfect rating. Lewis is by far better than Shilo in terms of football and now, it looks like he might have more money in his pockets than him too.

As per the latest NIL rankings, Shilo’s social media presence and influence outrank Lewis any day but when it comes to the financial prowess, the youngster from Carrollton has him beat. Shilo has a total number of 1.4 million followers to his name whereas Lewis lags behind with just 218K followers.

When it comes to NIL valuations, Shedeur Sanders has everyone beat with a total worth of $4.7 million, and yet, his brother stands at the overall 20th rank with $1 million. It’s almost as if Julian Lewis is the underdog who’s coming for the Sanders men since he’s already overtaken Shilo’s valuation with a total of $1.1 million and if he chooses to come to Colorado, he will be taking over Shedeur’s role in the team as a starting quarterback also. As for now, Shilo’s valuation doesn’t hold a lot of significance either since he declared bankruptcy due to a lawsuit from 2016, indicating that he’s not eligible to use any of that $1 million for quite some time.

Shilo Sanders and his bankruptcy issues

Shilo Sanders is currently in a debt of more than $11 million. John Darjean, a security guard, sued Shilo over his allegations of suffering permanent spinal and severe nerve injuries when Deion’s son assaulted him at his school in 2015. The court ruled in Darjean’s favor and prompted Shilo to pay over $11 million in damages but instead, Shilo chose the easy way out and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in an effort to “get a fresh start”, meaning that he won’t be able to spend his money for a long time until the period of criteria is fulfilled.

Shilo planned to stop Darjean’s efforts in collecting the major heap of debt and also get out of the legal restriction as soon as possible. Yet, Darjean has spoken in great length in the past over how he won’t stop going after the Colorado safety until the debt is paid in full. Moreover, Darjean’s attorneys have emphasized how Shilo has appeared in several partnerships with notable brands like KFC and Oikos Yogurt but failed to mention these deals during his bankruptcy case. Thus, it doesn’t look like Deion’s son will get to spend any of his wealth for a long time now, adding more to the superiority of Julian Lewis over him.
