Is Kirby Smart being unfairly targeted, or does he need to tighten the reins on his players?

It’s raining sarcasm (tinged with a dash of anger)! But when it’s Josh Pate we’re talking about, it’s only natural. The podcaster has not missed a chance to back Georgia head coach Kirby Smart about the mess in his program of students not following laws and getting arrested. In the last six months, three have been arrested from the program for irresponsible driving, and that’s not where the saga ends.

Fans took notice when a dozen players, most notably RaRa Thomas, were arrested in Athens-Clark County on July 26, facing charges of cruelty and two misdemeanors. It was the fever pitch of crimes by UGA students. Despite it all, Smart has nothing substantiated planned that he has made public to control the hotbed of crimes.

The internet is flooded with fans claiming Kirby Smart is not taking strict actions to ensure student and staff members’ safety. The fact does not sit well with Josh Pate. The guy has even gotten into a battle to prove that there must be something that Kirby Smart would be doing, in or outside the public eye, to ensure safety.

“The head coach is always responsible for his program. Never suggested otherwise. I’m also saying the best teams are player-led and if UGA’s leadership is where it should be those guys will take matters into their own hands,” replied Pate to a user who claimed that the university is not getting involved even after so many cases.

Since they do not see any change or strict policies being implemented, the fans still do not believe Smart is getting involved. And they are not letting it go, either. “Well, obviously they haven’t so Kirby needs to step in. The fact he’s doing nothing is an embarrassment to himself and his university,” commented another fan, retorting back to Pate’s earlier tweet.

Running out of ways to defend Smart, Pate resorted to sarcasm, saying, “Is it your sincere belief Kirby Smart, who has a borderline aneurism 20 times per game, has watched two-dozen arrests pile up this year and hasn’t taken any action?”

What’s your perspective on:

Is Kirby Smart being unfairly targeted, or does he need to tighten the reins on his players?

Have an interesting take?

According to Anthony Dasher of UGA Sports, Smart has suspended Thomas indefinitely. That is just about the player. However, Smart’s review of the need to address the main problem has only enraged the masses further.

A ‘disappointing’ incident for Kirby Smart

Don’t get us wrong, Smart has issued his statement following Thomas’ arrest. “The incidents that we’ve had off the field are not something that we condone. It’s very unfortunate – disappointing,” Smart said, expressing his displeasure with the events unfolding in Georgia for the past few months.

However, Smart has yet to introduce strict measures for the students so that any further “unfortunate incidents” can be curbed. This is what is enraging the crowds further. Fans want to know what measures the university or the head coach of the program has taken to bring down the crime rate among their students. Unless they get that, the online back-and-forth war is expected to continue.
