The team which has the most impending awaited official announcements to make, but chose to speak with their actions instead? Sounds like a description of the current scenario at Michigan Wolverines. The enigmatic future of Michigan’s pivotal members has created a highly anticipatory aura. With the National Championship already with them, fans can’t wait to know if Jim Harbaugh would make the everywhere-talked-about switch to the NFL, or whether JJ McCarthy would enter the 2024 NFL draft.

Rumors credit the sign-stealing fiasco to be one of the primary reasons behind Michigan players and the head coach not dropping any hints beforehand of the official announcement. However, per the latest reports, the duo have already made up their minds and have made their team aware of it.

In a recent call with the 2022 Michigan star recruit Will Johnson, Woodward Sports reporter Ryan Ermanni inquired about Michigan’s student-athletes stance on the debate of Harbaugh’s-McCarthy’s future. When asked if Jim Harbaugh had made a decision and if JJ McCarthy is coming back, Johnson replies with a straightforward, “Yes I do know the answer to those questions.” Brandon Justice decoded the response to an even simpler form. “Based on this, Jim either already has an NFL job or he’s staying,” commented he.

Even NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported that Jim Harbaugh had hired Don Yee, who is a reputed NFL agent. But Maize and Blue Review’s editor quashed the ignition with “This is not new. Yee was hired a while ago and has been working on the extension with Michigan.” the call is tricky for Harbaugh and McCarthy, especially when it comes to the list of pros and cons of the decision.

Pros and Cons of the decision

If Harbaugh is to choose Michigan, he will get a contract extension till 2026, and one of the highest-paying jobs in college football paying $55 million annually. On the dark side, he would be exclusive to Michigan, at least for the 2024 season. Also, Jim Harbaugh is already looking down the barrel of Big Ten’s gun, as the punishments and investigations were cut short because of playoffs, which will be presumably resumed in the next season. And Harbaugh would have to deal with it.

On the other hand, if he decides to go back to the NFL, team selection would be the make-or-break point of his career ahead. Not to mention, the stakes of him wagering his reputation earned at Michigan going down the drain if things with the NFL team do not work out well. If McCarthy decides to shift to the NFL, he would be suddenly exposed to the harshness of the league. Given that McCarthy has already honed his skills enough, staying at Michigan by leveraging his remaining eligibility would only make him more of a skilled QB. Both Jim Harbaugh and McCarthy have one question to answer: NFL or NCAA?
