Baby steps are what it took for Jim Harbaugh to restore his faith back in the Lombardi Trophy. The past scars of the loss against his brother John Harbaugh were enough to set Jim back in his journey to his ultimate dream, the Super Bowl. After all, he was a breath away from lifting the Ring when his brother snatched it under his nose about 12 years back. That won’t be the scenario now, as Jim Harbaugh’s team, the LA Chargers, is in the same conference, the AFC, as his brother John Harbaugh’s team, the Ravens. Hence, the unsettled records would rather be disputed between the two during the AFC Championship game, if both manage to reach there.

Yet, as the Chiefs roar with their 4th Super Bowl Championships, Jim Harbaugh is transported right back to the evening of 9th January, when his team, Michigan Wolverines, had echoed a similar roar in the college football world by winning the National Championships. Along with becoming the highlight of his resume, it also etched itself as one night that Harbaugh would cherish forever. When asked about it post-Chargers switch, Jim Harbaugh remembered it with a proud smile. “We did that,” Jim was proud to say.

His words indicated that it was a core memory of his life, which he would proudly remember, even after decades. “When I was leaving the team and coming to the Chargers, I just thought, ‘Don’t forget that’. Don’t forget that you did that. And when people stop talking about it, and it dials down, just the way you walk, the way you carry yourself and look at each other, it would be a head nod, it won’t be a deep long bow anymore but it will still be that,” confessed he.

While the 34-13 win against the National Championship was a soothing balm to Harbaugh’s past wounds, it would only heal once he settled the pending records with his brother.

“Jim Harbaugh is the best coach in the NFL,” John Harbaugh had said when the Ravens won the Super Bowl. While it was the 49ers who lost against the Ravens, it was Jim Harbaugh’s dream that shattered into a million pieces.
